Living and dying by donkatude.

One a those days, huh. Well, a wiser fella than myself once said, sometimes you eat the bar and sometimes the bar, well, he eats you. - The Stranger

I had one of those games last night, some questionable moves paid off and I was in great shape down to 2 tables in the mook when this hand went down.

Here I am in the BB with twoblackaces and a chip lead. Talk about your dream scenario, then I get 2 players pushing in front of me. Yipeeeee.

Here are the results.

Full Tilt Poker Game #6973754845: The Mookie (52299422), Table 2 - 200/400 Ante 50 - No Limit Hold'em - 0:00:48 ET - 2008/06/26

TheMan2484 shows a full house, Queens full of Jacks
TheMan2484 wins the main pot (19,905) with a full house, Queens full of Jacks
lucko21: lol

Brilliant!

So there ya go, sometimes you live by the donk and sometimes you die by it.

Someone at the table suggested that hand was repayment for bad beating KK with K9. Does anyone else share the opinion that flops have a memory and likes to repay a player for inflicting a beat upon someone else??

I'll be spending another weekend at the baseball field watching the all-stars try to win their way to a State tournament. Wish us luck!

You guys be careful out there.

Foxes, Fishies, and Flying

Hello again folks!

I'm gently trying to urge myself to be productive here on my little space in the internets.

As most of you know, once you take some time off from anything it's pretty hard to jump back into the game. Since writing for me is mostly catharsis, I need to push ahead when I'm feeling blogged down or blah.

Right now I'm not particularly motivated to write other than for the sake of writing, so I will just plug away and you folks will just have to bear with me.

I finally got around to downloading Firefox 3, and I've been tweaking it a little here and there. I don't know if it is actually faster. It does feel that way, but possibly that is because I deleted about 6 add-ons that I wasn't really using. I've downloaded my third theme now and can't find one better than the Default so far. I imagine a lot of developers are still tweaking things for FF3. So does anyone have any suggestions for add-ons or themes?

Add-ons I use: Adblock Plus, Firebug, Delicious Bookmarks ( del.icio.us/23skidoo ), GooglePreview, Greasemonkey, Hyperwords, Scrapbook, Stumbleupon, Sxipper.

I flung come cards over at PokerStars a good bit last week and luckboxed into some decent sized scores for myself. I'd like to get some $$$ off there and don't want to wait the 15-?? days to get a check, so if anyone wants to trade Paypal or FT $ let me know. It's really weird how I can do so well on one site and burn $ at another. There must be something tied to full moons and the mating rituals of the West African Spotted Drunken Lemur.

Its time to FLY.....

Next week I'll be back in NY. I'm hoping the NYC crew finds the time to get together and sling some cards on Monday or Tuesday. At least you guys know I'm not afraid to donate by now.....

The week after that is OKIE VEGAS. I'm once again very excited for this years festivities not excluding eating a chicken fried steak as big as my head , check-raising locals, and passing out on the nearest chair (doh).

Thanks for stoppng by and see you (you know who you are) soon!!!

The weeds.

I've finally made it out of the weeds....

I was a waiter and bartender for a good period of my 20's and early 30's. I worked at crappy Bar and Grill's to Five Star resorts. In all paces there comes a period of time when your demand for time out measures your ability to give it.

A waiter can react in two different ways to getting in the weeds.

1) Get buried.
2) Focus.

I'm not gonna lie, I've been buried before. It is usually not tied to a problem with my abilities to cope, but correlates to situations beyond my control. (slow kitchen, too many tables at the same time, demanding customers....)

As I learned to be a waiter, I learned tricks to getting myself out of the weeds. The best formula is to focus. Draw a map in your head and get there, don't let anything get in your way. If something trips you up you just push a little harder.

So the last three weeks I had a few projects converge upon me, hectic family schedule, travel, and the inevitable crowbar thrown in for good measure.

Without going in to too many boring details, I have emerged unscathed. I just had to put my head down and keep plugging away. Ticking off the bullet points, testing, fixing, breaking, fixing, testing..... you get the picture.

So this is a long intro to say, in case you have missed my witty banter over the past 4-5 weeks, sorry I've been away and I will try to be a better blogger.

Since you've last seen your hero he's gone through several challenging work and non work related episodes, including:

  • Traveling all over mid-Georgia with my All-Star Baseball playing son. This team won't be going to the world series, but it has been a good experience for him.
  • Working till 4AM one morning I fall asleep at the wheel driving home. I miraculously only hurt my car. 4 New wheels: $600, Tie Rods, tires, and misc broken stuff: $1800; My health: priceless.
  • Flamed out in the BBT3 TOC. I got too many marginal cards and tried to play them.
  • The wife has once again joined the workforce. She got a great offer to work for the gubment until she finishes off her Law degree. This complicates day to day stuff as the kids will go to 'summer camp' during the day until school starts, but they seem pretty keen on the idea of doing stuff rather than going to the pool everyday.
  • Took a 3 day trip to NY and got to see nary a blogger :(. I had precious little time on this trip, so it was probably for the best.
Thats about covers the major stuff. I'll be taking a short day today and I'll get a day off tomorrow to drive to south Georgia and attend my family reunion. My family reunion is akin to a blogger weekend with less cards and more food and booze.

I'm heading out to NY again 6/30-7/2 and hopefully can meet up with a representative or two from the NY crew then. I'll send you guys an email soon since I got such a raucous response last time.

You guys be careful out there.

UGH

It's bad enough being sick, it's 10 times worse being sick and not being able to curl up in our own bed and go to sleep.

I'm pretty sure I have a sinus infection now. My head feels like its filled with hot oatmeal. The capper is I'm out of town and no one is here to feed me soup. wah.

Like a trooper I made it out to WSP last night. It was a small, but lively group and we played dealers choice mixed games. It reminded me of Cat's home game, but at 20x the stakes. Fun was had.

I attempted to self medicate and enjoy myself, mission accomplished. I was also hoping to erase some of the losses I've had at WSP the last few times here. No such luck, it is quite possible I over medicated.

Big thanks to Jamie for setting up the game on an off night and thanks to the NY degenerates who came and relieved me of my $. See you next time!

Hash and re-hash

I ended up close to bubbling and I went through my notes on the 15k last night.

I have never taken the time to figure out Bodog's screwy hand history keeping, and I can't really be bothered. They need to move on into the 21st century though, geez UPDATE YOUR FUCKING GUI ALREADY!

I felt pretty good about my game last night. I was fairly focused and played with confidence. The damn cards didn't cooperate though, I wasn't given much to play with and the Jacks hand should have put me in good position for a final table run. Instead I had to scrape around and play some marginal holdings vs. large stacks. Oh well.

I've been super tired lately and just can't get motivated to stay up till 1-2AM playing the bloggerments. I've already punched my ticket and can't play enough to contend for monthly goals, so again I'm cool with playing a limited amount and playing well.

I'll be heading up to NYC at the ass-crack of pre-dawn and will hopefully be able to hook up with my good buddies et al. tomorrow and Thursday.

Absentee Landlord

That's how I feel in regards to this blog lately. For the two or three of you who actually enjoy reading my drivel, I am sorry.

I did have a thought this morning in regards to losing and a losing mindset. I've read a few blogs in the last couple of days that are perpetually semi-tilted and frustrated. I do realize that some people have a less rosy outlook than others and that's cool if that's your gig. Some people can vent, get things off their chest and everything is cool again. Others continue to see the worst of situations and keep dragging themselves down.

You must realize that what you are doing is nothing but programming yourself for failure.

I was there last year at this time and you can keep telling yourself over and over again that its just a rut or a downswing or the moon has left the 7th house if you want to. The plain truth is that until you get your head straight, you will keep falling down the path and wonder when the ground is coming.

I'm telling you , you have to reach out for that rock or that tree branch or something. Until you can reprogram your head you'll just keep falling.

"Well gee Dr. skidoo, you make it sound so easy" you say.

Well its not. And I really don't know how to fix it for you.

I can't precisely tell you what did it for me, but I can tell you winning helps. I did some deep thinking, question asking, reading, soul searching, drinking, changing my name ...you name it. I kept trying though.

What helped me was simplifying everything. I gave myself a list of rules to follow and I only played when I could follow the rules. Slowly but surely my confidence recouped, I took pride in small wins which turned into some pretty nice wins and once again I felt 'open' and free to play poker like the true donkey I am.

So, you've all heard it before from somewhere I'm sure, I did before my funky 2007 and I didn't heed any of it I just had to figure it out myself.

Here it is again then, from a poker player who is probably not as good as you are.

YOU can make things change, YOU are the key and YOU are the one who must change. Open up your focus and step away from the things that are bringing you down. Focus on yourself and you can accomplish anything you want.

Cheers and have a good weekend!

OH! Poker in my 'hood tonight if anyone wants to come! Drop me a line, you know who you are.

Weekend Wrap up

Short post, but I'm trying....

I got 18 players to come and play in the 'man pit' Friday night. I really like the structure that I mostly stole from Kaja as it allows a fair amount of play, but didn't seem to last too long.

I busted in 7th or so when I ran a poorly conceived bluff at someone who was incapable of folding. I do believe I remembered my manners though. My big bro cashed in 2nd with Johnny "Dutch Oven" in 3rd and Francase's buddy Matt took the whole thing down. Good times.
We followed up with a little cash game, but my head was fairly clouded by Heineken at that point. I'm pretty sure I spent more time on the back porch smoking a stogie with my brother and shooting the shit with various folks.

Saturday we slept pretty late, then we went to a Cinco de Mayo party in the 'hood for a little bit. We watched the derby and I picked EightBelles to win....I like the filly's. DOH, we spent the next hour or so explaining to the kids why she had to be euthanized.

We weren't in the mood for Mexican, so we ate at a FANTASTIC Italian place up the street. The kids had fresh hand tossed pizza, the wife had her fall-back manicotti, I had a seafood marinara dish with clams, mussels, calamari and shrimp. I can't wait to finish that off tonight. We finished off the kids night by watching Mr Majorium's...blah blah...I was less than impressed.

The wife had to go meet some friends after that, so of course I fired up the poker machine. I ended up taking down a $69 - 45 person while chatting up my brother, then cashing in the $100MTT. I promptly donked off all my winnings and then some..yay me.

Thats it for now kids! See you at the Bodonk tomorrow.

April Showers, or When it Rains it Pours, or Full of Sound and Fury, Signifying Nothing.

April has been a heck of a month, and like the rhyme goes I 'm really hoping the storms will nourish my life's soil and provide flowers for May and beyond.

I nearly whiffed on posting in April for various reasons.

First of most was leading an intrepid band of scientists, archaeologists, and drunks into the far reaches of Madagascar in search of the recently missing Al Can't Hang. We were hot on his trail in Egypt where he had single handedly endangered the Scarabaeus sacer because of the rumor that the beetle's blood closley resembled Southern Comfort. We cornered him in Madagascar performing rituals with the natives. He had devolved so far that his eyes we're nearly blind, his hair, ratty and curled from overexposure. He had given up SoCo and moved on to a mixture of citronella and kerosene. Here's is the last picture we took of him before his capture.
Al is now resting comfortably among his friends and family and will be ready to return soon.

I unbelievably secured a TOC seat in the BBT3 by taking down the MATH. What little poker I have been able to play has been pretty good for the rest of the month.
I managed to play a few other tourneys and got close, but no other big scores.

Work has been more of the same, possibly a little busy. I managed to hire a new employee who looks to be a real good choice. Here's hoping that first impressions last. Soon I'll be able to go back to finding clever ways of making someone else do my job.

A couple weeks ago I made my way to NYC and was able to have a pretty nice dinner with bloggerdom's soon to be rambling, gambling and writing couple. Final verdict B- mostly because CK and I agreed on a wine, and it was not so good. The company and conversation and the fact I was nicely buzzed made me not care a whole hell of alot about it.

David Williams joined the the regular boobs at the Bodog donkament. I was seated to his right at the beginning and couldn't wait to have a chance at busting him.For some stupid reason I was moved about three hands later.... Can someone at Bodog explain moving players at the beginning of a tournament?

Lastly and most importantly, I will be able to achieve one of the goals I set for 2008. I booked my flight for Okie Vegas!!!

I pushed real hard to make this happen this year, now I'm ready to goooooooo!

Hopefully I'm more motivated to post this coming month and I'll be able to fill your lives with pointless drivel once again.

Cheers!
