Fifth Street Blues

OK, Let me try this again, not that this is interesting in the least, but one must keep up appearances lest one fall off the face of the earth.

To explain, I write my posts in textpad copy, paste and edit them in blogger. Works like a charm 99.999% of the time for me. I was extremely busy yesterday, so I wrote my post, cut the text and pasted into blogger and submitted. I flip to another tab in firefox and I notice after awhile the little round busy dealy is still spinning on the blogger page. I go back to discover a blank page....ugh. No problem, I can just paste back into textpad and repeat. WRONG. I had copied a link, thus losing my post. So I have to place a small bit of blame on myself for being impatient.

Lesson Learned.

As I was trying to say, Friday was poker night in my donkahood, we played 11 handed for the first tourney and split to 2 tables of 6 for the second. I played very tight (yeah right) in the tourneys and got sucked upon in both of them, and no... no reach around was offered or anything, just pure un-adulterated fonkeyness to which BUTCH can attest.

I had the situations laid out in my other post, but now it doesn't matter. I put my chips in ahead in both circumstances and was thrown the doom switch by live cards. Bubble boy in the first tourney and 6th in the second.

Afterwards we played 1/2 limit in which I further offered my rectum for punishment.

Now isn't that a pleasant vision?

I had some more clever things to say or at least one clever thing, but I forgot.

I'm running near empty again on FT, go figure..I take more swings than Ann Heche and Mike Tyson combined.

I'll be in New York next week, but I'm not sure if I'll have time for social behavior. On the off chance, Thursday would be the night I could possibly do a meet and greet with fellow bloggers and possibly throw some cards around time permitting. So drop me a line if you might find yourself in the city without plans on the 26th.

and Hey! You be careful out there*

*my lame ass attempt at a tag line ala G-cox. sad aint it?

BREAKING NEWS!

wait for it.....

I'm a donk!!!! Who'd a thunk it???

Yeah, I suppose this isn't news to a great deal of you. But I think I am uniquely gifted at giving away money at the poker table. On the plus side I'm a pretty fun guy to be around, especially if I'm facing you at the tables where I just open up my little pockets for you to take what's mine. That said, knowing is half the battle, and I'll keep battling it until i run out of freely spendable income (which may happen VERY soon).

So in that vein, you ATL folks feel free to come get some of my hard earned cash tonight!!

If you didn't already get an e-mail, let me know and I'll send you the particulars.

In Dreams

I don't often have vivid dreams, and when I do I can only recall images or feelings.

Last night I had a dream. I woke up around 5AM disturbed and started to recall it. It was a familiar setting and one I've had in many dreams.

My Grandmother's house.

The house where my father grew up was in a large, heavily wooded neighborhood in between the marshes of Glynn county and downtown Brunswick.

Brunswick started as one of the five original ports of entry for the 13 colonies. It serves as a hub for car imports as well as wood pulp products. One thing visitors notice immediately is the smell. There is a thick mixture of heavy sea air, shrimp, and wood processing that hangs on the whim of the wind, which there is plenty.

My grandparents built the small, but comfortable house on an acre of flat land which held some of the best climbing oaks known to boy-dom. I spent several weeks of nearly every summer vacation in the house with my grandparents, usually joined by my cousin John who is only one year younger than myself. His older brother called my grandmother Gan, my grandfather was Dado. Being the oldest, he got naming rights on the grandparents, so the names stuck.

When my father decided to quit the rat race and buy a business on St. Simons island, just across the marsh, he bought the house from my grandmother and moved his new family there. I was begrudgingly moved from Atlanta into a house with my 2nd step-mother and her 2 daughters.

There are plenty of memories wrapped up in that setting, both bad and good. I did an awful lot of growing up in that house, so I suppose my mind retreats there when it's feeling lazy. Its a comfortable backdrop.

I've been trying to piece the memory of this dream together, and it seems trivial, but the fact is that it didn't feel trivial when I woke up mid-slumber at 5AM.

I was sitting in Gan's tiny kitchen. I knew it was Gan's kitchen because the old refrigerator was there. One of those bulbous 50's 'friges with the huge silver-chrome pull handles on it.

I was sitting on the floor with my wife and someone else. I tugs at my brain trying to figure out the other person there since they were central to my comfort (or lack of it) in the situation.

Behind me, there was a large pot of boiling water, steaming into the air with the screams of crabs. I used to think it was screaming when I was a kid, and I liked it in a sadistic kid-like way.

Back in the day, John and I would get our crab traps, three or 4 packs of chicken necks and a bucket. We'd walk down to the marsh when the tide was just beginning to wane, and we'd pull plenty of crabs out of the water to fill the bucket before we could see the muddy bottom of the marsh.

We'd proudly present our bucket to Gan and she'd boil 'em up for us. To this day, I have never had crab that good.

My wife and I were having a light discussion, sitting on the floor, when the phone rang. We didn't pick up the phone though. We let it ring till the answering machine picked up. There was a long pause and a smallish girl spoke. She left a message for me, but I did not recognize the voice.
The third person and I had an animated discussion surrounding the phone call. It was as if I was blaming the third person for the discomfort the call and the message caused.

What's strange is I remember the name, and when I woke up this morning, I remembered most of the number. What i remember most of all is the feeling of betrayal and anger I had after the call.

The problem is that I have no idea why I was mad...perhaps upset is a better description.

In the dream I tried to reason why this person would call me and leave a message. I remember looking at the number on the Caller ID and it was different than the one given in the message. Why would she try to lie? Too many questions, and I was anxious.

I wish I could remember more, which is the crux of most of my dreams. I remember images and feelings but never specifics.

I do know that this morning I checked the caller ID on my phone, but there was nothing from last night/this morning. I also had the distinct feeling that things were out of place.

If I was a better writer, I'd have a clever device to put this together and make it coherent, but I just felt like getting the feeling down so I could try to get to the root of it.

I'm coming up sort of empty right now, and I'm going to choose to ignore any blatant commitment/marriage/faith issues in some random girl leaving a message for me on the phone. The girl is a red herring for the feeling I woke up with.

I just cant put my finger on it.

Drunken donkery with 23skidoo...

By no means do I want to make light of my frame of mind at times. It does scare me that I put myself into stupid situations especially in regards to gambling in general and more specifically in Poker.

One thing I do know about myself is that I lack control of myself in times when control is most needed...When I am drinking.

The kind folks at Full Tilt were gracious enough to forward my hand history to me, so I could revel in my stupidity. I played about 400 hands last Thursday....nutty eh?

What I found when looking through my hand history is that occasionally the gods will smile on you and take pity.

Thursday was such a night for your truly. I had no business playing cards but it worked out. I went through the history looking for logic, but what I found was pure loose passive play. Somehow it happened to work.

So I earmarked some hands I found interesting and tried to channel the donk within who was playing from my body on Thursday. Feel free to weep, laugh, or completely ignore it.

I played a bit of OH8 No limit and made some good money. Here's a hand that established a running theme:

It is true, Donkeys CAN fly!! Certainly I'll give it back, its just a matter of time.

Panic on the streets

After a few cocktails, I decided it was best just to head back to the hotel. I paid my tab and started walking down the street. Well, I thought to myself it might be a good idea to see if I could find a place to get a 6-pack and maybe rent a movie to pass out to.

I get to Fifth Avenue and take a look to the left. I see a line of folks coming out of a building a little ways down, so I naturally decide to investigate. I walk down the avenue, visions of seeing the beautiful people packed in a trendy New York club. I get a half block away and realize its a bunch of sheeple standing outside the Empire State Building.

No worries, cause there was a CVS close by. I wanted a smoke and to see if I could make the 6-pack thing happen. Low and behold CVS had cold single beers and 12 packs.....what's a thirsty boy to do? Duh, go for the twelver of course!

I decided at that point that it may just be a long night for me. I grabbed the drinks and smokes and head back to the confines of my room. I noticed on the way in that there was a large contingent of folks going in and out of the place across the kabob place. I registered it for some reason, thinking it was strange.

Back in the cool closet disguised as a hotel room, I fired up the TV and browsed around. I didn't feel like a movie, or TV, or even Nintendo.

I couldn't resist much longer....I needed cards to complete my holy trinity of degeneracy.

I slipped on my slippers, stashed a beer in my pocket with my smokes and head outside. For some reason I had it in my mind that there were shenanigans afoot at the Kabob place. I really wanted to check it out.

I stepped outside and strolled down the block sipping my beverage and dragging off the cig. I took a conspicuous spot across the street and watched.

Lots of cab drivers coming in and out..they were just getting food. Why the heck was this place packed?? I couldn't resist. I finished the beer and head across the street into a heavy curry fog.

I didn't take me long to figure out I was wrong. I walked past the food counter into a room with several televisions on the wall. Here all the guys sat, talking in their native tongues. Few took notice of me, but I was fairly freaking sure there were no cards going on here, and if there was; I was not on the guest list.

So I turned and realized I had to save face to the imaginary people that were now watching me. I had to order some food, and did, even though I had no intention of eating it.

I quickly paid then fled to the relative safety of my hotel room. There was no way out, I 'needed' to play some cards now, I had no choice. I fired up the old laptop and downloaded FT for the umpteenth time on this laptop.

I unfortunately forgot to save any hand histories of my play, does anyone know of a way to get hand histories from FT if you did not select to save them? I e-mailed support, but who knows if I'll get a response.

Anyway, I played in a $10 and a $20 SNG, and got 3rd in the $10, but I was bored and feeling frisky, so I decided to look for a cash game.

In my stupor, I decided to fire up the 8/16 HORSE table that had Keith Sexton on it. There were only 5 people there when I sat, with rolls between $150 and $500. I joined in with 300 just to play a few hands for the hell of it.

I can only imagine I was playing wild and loose, because I distinctly remember betting off several hands and taking some fairly good pots. I remember thinking to myself that I would get caught eventually and would have to leave.

I racked up about twice my buy in and Richard "the Quiet Lion" Brodie joined in. I don't remember any chat, as I was half way finished with my CVS purchase. I racked up to over a grand at the table and cashed out around $825. The angles were smiling on me I suppose.

If I get any sort of hand history, I'll have to go through it, 'cause I honestly can't remember any hands I played....pretty sad huh?

I guess thats all for now, but I am chomping at the bit to play more cards, but I have to try and wait just a little longer.

Weekend wrap-up

I'm still dehydrated.

My weekend started on Thursday morning at 4:45AM. I turned the alarm off and drug my feet to the shower. It took a few minutes to register that the water was about 15 degrees too hot and I cowered to the corner of my shower stall. I eventually regained the feeling in my feet and wiped away the 4 hours of sleep from my eyes.

Ten minutes or so later I dried off and donned my travel gear. T-shirt, long sleeve shirt and wool jacket. I'd be leaving the humid comfort of Georgia to too-cold Airports and too warm airplanes only to arrive in the gawky in-between days of winter to spring in New York. I had to be prepared for the 50's while dressing in the 70's.

I got my comfy shoes, laptop bag, kissed the wife and kids in their slumber and headed to the busiest airport in the world. I cut it a little close on this occasion, only giving myself a little over an hour to get there and make it to the gate. I pulled into the airport with plenty of time to spare, but got caught in the drudgery of a just opening security check. I suppose they always get a bit backed up in the morning.

I got through the line on the way in and had my ticket checked by the Angel Lady. The Angel Lady has worked at the Airport for a while. I heard her talking sweetly to the passengers in front of me. She was a smaller black woman with tightly curled hair high on her head. I would say she was in her 50's but very well could have been north of that given the wrinkles around her always smiling mouth. She called everyone by their name and I dubbed her the Angel Lady since she was so sweet and had about 4 angels stuck to her sweater. I got up to her in line and I told her I liked her angels. She said " Oh thank you darlin', you know I didn't buy one of these charms. They were given to me by passengers" I told her it must be because she was such an angel. She laughed and shooed me away to the security gate.

I'm bringing an angel charm with me the next time I go to the airport.

I went straight to my seat as they were boarding the last few rows, my luck held out though as the plane was only half full and I had three seats to myself. I fell back to sleep before the plane took off.

The last time I came to New York, we had a limo waiting on us, this time I was alone, and decided to try the train. It wasn't too bad, even though I had no idea where I was going. I trusted the info I pulled from the crackberry was accurate, and it was. I got into Penn station and decided to try and check in to my room. The place I was staying was only a few blocks away, and I needed to get the blood moving. I knew going to the hotel first was a risk, being a bit before 10, but I wanted to relieve myself of some luggage and splash some warm water on my face.

The walk was good, but I was denied entry, aww fuckit. I hopped in a cab and headed to the office.

As I feared, the actual emergency took about 10 minutes to fix. There was plenty more for me to do though. I tried convincing Jordan to meet me at the salami game, but he was warmed up to the wife. I briefly entertained the possibility of going there on my own, but decided against it. I'm such a wuss.

I decided an early dinner and some rest was a better plan, I should actually know better than thinking thats going to happen for me, but I told myself at the time that I'd be good.

I arrived at the hotel around 7:15 and checked in. They tried to give me a hard time about using the wife's card, but I used the jedi mind trick on them and they left me alone. The secret to using the trick is to remain calm. If you keep your angle, and never let them fluster you, they will cave.

I flopped on to the bed and let my feet bark for a bit. I washed them off and changed socks. Total key to refreshing yourself right there. Clean dry feet and new socks.....works like a charm.

I already knew where I was going to eat. I had passed the Irish pub 3 times, and it spoke to me. You can virtually guarantee decent service in an irish pub, I like to sit at the bar, and the bartenders are usually good for at least casual conversation.

I forget the name, but it was packed, as I gather every place in NY is, with after workers getting their drunk on and shooting the shit. I was lucky enough to get a spot at the end of the bar, right next to the wait station. I don't mind so much since I spent a fair part of my life working in bars and restaurants. I get a good idea of how its going to go after a few minutes by checking out the clientele, the waitstaff and the initial greeting from the bartender. He says hi less than thirty seconds after I have sat, despite being slammed. Excellent. I think to myself. Bartenders should know that the counter customer can be their best, or worst. I knew which one I was, so when I asked for a shot of Johnny Walker, and he filled a small rocks glass nearly to the rim. I knew I'd be fine here.

My bartender's name was Michael, I said hello to him, and shook his hand. I had a salad and fish and chips to eat. The food sucked, but I didn't care. The second scotch was on the house. This is where things slowly start going south for your hero.

I'll finish part 2 later on tonight or tomorrow.

SPOILER ALERT: I played HORSE with not 1 but 2 known pro's.

I'll finish part 2 later on tonight or tomorrow.

SPOILER ALERT: I played HORSE with not 1 but 2 known pro's.

Short Notice NYC!!

I'll be in New York tomorrow to put out a small fire at my office there. I'll be there overnight, so hopefully I'll get my chit done and have some free time.

Let me know if any of you New yorkers can possibly meet up. I'll have a better sense of how things are going to go by mid-afternoon.

"New" Look

Is the same as the old look for the most part, I trimmed the blog roll a bit, so I'll have to re-add to it when I get more time. I also hopefully repaired the feeds finally. Those of you having problems let me know if the feed problems are still happening.

Unless i get a rush of entries for the poker blogger fantasy baseball league I will cancel it, unless of course the current players want to go with 5 managers. So let me know if that applies to you.

I have nothing else of consequence to say, so have a good week out there kids, and you be careful.

I'm going to hell....and one last plea.

In a moment of boredom, a slight buzz, and sheer depravity I could not resist her..

I walked in to the room quietly and she didn't even acknowledge me. I walked by and got her attention with a little brush of my index finger. She turned her attention to me and lit up. I hardly had time to react to her beauty. The warmth of her gaze drew me in and I was helpless... she was calling to me, wanting me like I haven't been wanted in weeks.

I pulled close to her and took her in my hands, she was all to willing, following my every command. Before I knew it I was committed, it was my turn to act and I went with it.

Oh poker machine, you beguile me, entrance me, and betray me. I am helpless against your charms, please be gentle.

ok, so yeah...I couldn't resist. I fired up FT to watch the mook for a bit and for some unknown reason pulled up a OH8 1/2 NL table. I played about 15 minutes and won 36 bucks. Boy do I feel dirty. I have 2 weeks and three days left of my self imposed lenton poker ban, and I can't even contain myself...woe is me.

Also, I still have spots on the Poker Blogger Fantasy Baseball league, I should be getting one more person which puts us at 6.. I need four more so let me know if you want to join and I'll give you the password. All the information you need is in the posts below..

OKIE - VEGAS!

BOOOOKED!!!

Wo0t!!!11

I've booked my flight and hotel for Okie Vegas. I'll be arriving at Will Rodgers on Thursday afternoon and staying through Sunday afternoon. I have a room at the Extended Stay near the Airport, hopefully its not a dump. I'm setting the over under at 16 hours of sleep for those three days, I'm thinking its pretty generous. If anyone wants to split the room or whatever, just let me know. It could be arranged.

I got a killer deal from Priceline BTW, less than $500 for the room and direct flights to and fro. So book now!!!

Weekend Wrap-up and a day I will not soon forget.

Friday night didn't go as I planned, I had hoped to make it over to CC's house to christen his beautiful poker room. The problem was, Friday was also Poker Night for my neighborhood. I have the 'honor' of running the game on a Monthly basis. I was hoping we would have a bad turnout and I could close up shop, but we had a very good turn out instead. +EV for me, I get to play against a 60/40 mix of players/donks rather than the table full of sharks over at CC's. It turns out I made the right choice for the bankroll as I took 2nd in the tournament then won another 60 playing .50/1 Holdem with a $5 max. Which really turned into 5 Limit. there were 2 guys at the table who were recklessly spewing chips and I was happy to partake of the action.

Saturday I sweated out the alcohol working in the yard, beginning my quarterly yard maintenance. I sprayed weeds, spread some granules and whacked down the butterfly bushes in the pine island. I will need to get about 30-40 bales of pine straw to complete the work. I'll go back through the island and yard next weekend for more spraying and weeding in preparation. Saturday night I stayed up till 2(3) to see if anything went wrong with my servers. I spent an hour or so logging on to various systems and checking things. As I suspected, nothing major happened and every thing seems to have changed time properly except a few clients in NY who probably didn't reboot as I asked. The wife was out with her mom and sister.

I got a call around 1:30, the wife was at her sister's house and they got their mom drunk! Trust me, this is something I have never seen, I've never seen this woman have more than one drink. Saturday she had three......evidently thats her limit. The wife decided to wait it out a bit, then take her mom home. They got a real good laugh out of it, but her mother was none to pleased. She wandered in around 4 am and we slept in instead of going to church.

Sunday morning was quiet, I got up and did my usual breakfast routine. Bacon, eggs, waffles and fruit. The kids love to help, but mostly love slathering everything on their plates with maple syrup. After Breakfast was cleaned up I took my cup of coffee out to the porch to get a little air and relaxation before beginning what was to be a full day. My cousin Stew was having his second child baptized (my justification for skipping early church) then having some people over to his new house. I really wanted to see his new place, Stew and I are very close and see each other once a month or so. (usually to disastrous results....but more on that another time). Then we were heading to my big brother's house for his daughters 4th birthday.

I sat and breathed in deep, the weather was just perfect outside. I wondered what the wife was doing, as I was sure she saw me go out. Several minutes later I hear a noise, I think to myself that the children have broken, maimed or thrown something, I reminded myself to take a breath before getting angry, then I heard the screams.

I ran through the front door and saw my wife coming up the stairs from the basement. She had our youngest daughter (G-squared) in her arms, her face was covered in blood and she was screaming. I froze, just for a second, and that image burned into my mind. My beautiful daughter looking at me mouth wide open, screaming, her eyes huge as saucers, pleading to me, and a huge red gash over her right eye streaming blood into her porcelain white face.

I swallowed and tried to breathe. I took g2 and sat her on the counter. I told my wife to get the number for the hospital, not 911. She called to find out if they had a plastic surgeon on call. I took a closer look at my little girl and reassured her it was going to be OK, even though I was holding back panic to the best of my abilities. I took off the towel my wife had gotten, and took a look. It was not easy to look at. She had a slice running from just below the orbit of her eye to the middle of her forehead as deep as it could go without going through her skull.

I looked at her eyes, she was in shock, but alert and talking. She was calming down a bit, and I tore through the medicine box and found the butterfly bandages. I had to get that bleeding stopped as much as possible. I taped the wound closed and grabbed the gauze. I taped gauze over the whole thing and told her to keep her hand pressing on it. She held the gauze there and I ran upstairs to get dressed, get kids shoes and a change of clothes for g2. We called Children's Healthcare of Atlanta and let them know we were coming. I just had too many doubts about taking her to the hospital in Cumming. I knew she would get the best care at Children's, and they confirmed there was a specialist on hand.

Children's Healthcare is located about 20 miles from our house, but it felt like it took an hour to get there. Master P and mouse briefly complained about going to the hospital instead of seeing their cousins. I firmly (maybe a bit too firmly) explained the situation to the kids in an attempt to make them understand the gravity of it all, but they really had no idea how bad it could have been.

The wife's folks were called, I explained the details to my mother in law who was a nurse at one time. I asked her about shock and what to do. G2 was sleepy, and I told my wife to keep talking to her and to make her stay awake. My mother in law went through a few general nurse-type questions and convinced me that g2 would be fine. She lost a good bit of blood, but her color was good and she was coherent and talking.

I hate Hospitals...but doesn't everyone? I especially hate hospitals when I have to stand in line with my child in my arms and a bloody towel over her face. We get her checked in and I resist every urge to scream at someone...I just wanted a fucking doctor to look at my child NOW, but I played the game and we waited.

The in-laws came in the door shortly thereafter and my sister in law came in with doughnuts and milk for everyone....damn she's good. After about 10 minutes and five trips to the admitting desk, we get called by triage. They go over the basics (again) and we finally get taken back to a room. I start feeling better in small increments.

We see the first doctor, who I am sure is lighter than peter pan, but he is very good. ( We are later informed that he is in fact married with children, and all the nurses call him 'PIP', hmmmm)He asks g2 all the questions, which she answers perfectly. He then asks who put on the butterfly bandages and I get a nice little pat on the back. He confirms the plastics dude is on the way, but he has to undress the bandage and apply the numbing agents which take 20-30 minutes to activate fully.

We relax a bit, g2 gets to watch the Incredibles.

The youngish Surgeon comes in and he is all business, but gentile and reassuring. I start to think about the small mint this is going to cost me and quickly push that thought out of my mind.

What's interesting is I was listening to the news station this morning, and they were reporting on a missing boy in Glynn county. They were interviewing the missing boy's grandmother and she stated something to the effect of "they can take my cars, my house, my land or my leg.....I just want that baby back. there ain't nothing that matters to me as much as that baby"

I just sit there and traffic and cry a little for that family, I felt the same way at the moment money crossed my mind. Nothing matters as much as my baby(ies) I'd go and clean that hospital on the night shift if that's what it came down to. But I know my insurance is good, and I knew I was just thinking irrationally.

The surgeon sewed 18 stitches into the injury and did really a fantastic job of talking to us and g2 during the procedure. She went through the whole thing wide awake and didn't move a muscle, there's just no way to explain how amazed of her I was. The doctors and staff were equally amazed at her demeanor and strength. I'm pretty sure she never cried during the entire visit.

We got the kids home, fed and in bed. We went downstairs and cleaned up the broken glass and table. We finally sat and talked, we played the "what if?" game for far too long going over and over how it must have happened and how close she was to losing her eye, and possibly her life.

As my sister said, she had a little angel on her shoulder.

We could have been making funeral arrangements, but we got to kiss our baby and put her in her bed. We could have been looking for some depraved pedophile who stole into our baby's room and took her off into the night, but she was safe and warm.

A little cut can do a lot of things to you...
