The full moon theory

Phil had a theory. See, he had studied fungus at UGA for two semesters and thought he had a good grasp on the stuff we were eating. "I bet you they follow the phase of the moon!" he said, and it made complete sense to me.

We rode up to our buddy Red's land on the north end of the island, just as we had done every week or so for the past few months. Red's mom owned a horse stable on the north end. The sons and daughters of the island's rich boarded their prize thoroughbreds along side the not so rich folks nags.

The property had four grazing pens, two walking arenas, a polo field and a large unused field that connected to a wooded area that Red's mom let us build our paint-ball installations. All told his family probably had about 20 acres or so dedicated to the stables.

We drove up to the first gate, lights off. We had to avoid the caretaker's little house at the head of the property and walk to our destination, bags and unlit flashlights in hand.

About a quarter mile down the dirt road, we had to make a left to the trail we had built and hidden a few weeks prior. The new trail eventually connected to a series of trails we had made encircling our makeshift paint-ball village. From there we gently walked to the northernmost grazing area.

We got to the open field and put away our flashlights. Three days before the full moon and a crystal clear night in October was all the light we needed to see our crop. The ground was pocked with white-grey spheres, trying to mimic the stars. This was the mother-load.

Three days was the morning.
My focus three days old.
My head, it landed to the sounds of cricket bows...
I am proud man anyway...
Covered now by three days...
Three Days

On a normal night to this point we were able to seek out and find 5 to 10 good mushrooms to pick. We giddily galloped through the field picking samples as small as a pencil and as large as a baby's hand. Eventually, we just left about half of the crop to shrivel and die in the next morning's heat. That first full-moon theory night we filled 3 garbage bags full of them. Yes we picked mushrooms out of horse manure. Free of charge with more than adequate amounts of psilocybin .

We got back to the Condo, our little Ocean Side place that also belonged to Red's family. All three of us lived there at the time. Red was intermittently working in Film and Commercial shoots as a grip, best boy, and PA. He naturally had the master bedroom. Phil and I worked as wine stewards in one of the most prestigious resorts in the world. Phil had the smaller room and I slept on my futon in the dining room, in the middle of the place. For what I lacked in privacy I gained a prime space on the island with little rent. I was willing to make the trade off. Besides, the frequent times Red was out of town I got the master suite.

We commenced calling everyone we could think of to partake with us. We found no one.

Given we all had limited experience with dosage, we decided to make a vat of tea with the contents of one of the bags. We still planned on having some people over, so we wanted to have plenty.

If you've ever tasted mushrooms, you'll know that it leaves much to be desired. Instead of drinking tea, we decided to make Cherry Kool-Aid mushroom tea, with plenty of sugar. By the time we gave up on anyone else joining our 'tasting' we had about 2 gallons of tea and the smushed up remnants of about 1 or 2 pounds of freshly picked mushrooms.

Early in the summer, Phil and I had attended an auction. It was one of those auctions where the owners of the storage units would open up the door and start the bidding on the contents. One of the items we won that day was a large box of plastic Pepsi cups, like a big gulp from 7-11.

We agreed to one big gulp full of tea apiece, then give it an hour and see where we were. Shortly after I finished my big gulp, I took a pinch of mushroom remnants and chewed on those too. Red and Phil followed suit. Shortly after that, we agreed to drink another half cup apiece.

I sat on the swivel chair in front of the TV and waited. Red and Phil suited up for a walk outside. We were going to stroll down to the beach once we started to feel the effects.

In a matter of minutes, my stomach felt heavy, but not sick heavy. I remember the feeling of my esophagus, arid and empty. I didn't feel like throwing up, but I breathed, mouth open as the warm sensation emanated from my mid section. Once the drug started kicking in, I felt like I was yawning all night, gasping for air. I remember loving the sweet taste of the ocean air, and the reciprocal feeling of drowning in it.

We sat there in the living room, silent. My body felt like a brick and I needed to break the spell. We agreed to move, and walked out the side entry to the beach access two floors below.

We reached our first obstacle, the rocks. During high-tide the water laps at the rocks for hours depositing trash, dead stuff, and crabs. At night, the palmetto bugs come to pick through the trash and dead things, the crabs would scurry about, picking them off.

As we walked towards the rocks they seemed to teem with life, the dance of shadows and light made the rocks crawl with real and imaginary fiends. We made our way quickly and gingerly over the rocks to the dampened beach. The tide was receding, bearing the smooth, rippled beach under the moonlight in front of us.

I tried to gather my walk to a sprint down the unearthly terrain westward toward the marshes and away from the prying moon. I came to realize quickly that my legs weren't going to comply, in fact I realized that it was very hard to balance at all. The wet beach stretched out in front of me and breathed like the belly of some great sea serpent. I fell flat on my stomach then rose to my hands and knees and balanced against the undulating terrain.

I laughed, Red and Phil were behind me laughing too. Huge spectre-like grins on their faces. "This is too much" said Dave. "Too much input!" I rolled onto my back and looked up at the stars, dancing, vibrating in a rainbow of colors. I agreed, a controlled environment would be best.

We ambled back the roughly 400 Feet we had made it out of our little cocoon, and flopped down in the living room. I regained the swivel chair that would witness the most swiveling it had ever enabled in a five hour period. Phil got the over sized chair and ottoman, Red laid down on the couch.

I managed to flip on the CD player, found Reckoning, and hit repeat.

Over the course of the next few hours we talked sparing, incoherent sentences and moved little. Phil disappeared to the bathroom for what seemed like an eternity. Red laid on the couch, his hands would occasionally reach up to move the air, or an imaginary item. "The colors...its so huge I can taste it." He said.

I sat on my chair and swiveled, I kept moving because the room was burning images into my retina, the whole Condo was creating shadow effects on my vision. I constantly blurred my vision in order to keep focus. I needed to listen to the music. It was so fragile and beautiful.

To lay me down once more, to lay me down
With my head in sparkling clover
Let the world go by, all lost in dreaming
To lay me down one last time, to lay me down

To be with you once more, to be with you
With our bodies close together
Let the world go by, like clouds a-streaming
To lay me down one last time, to lay me down

To lay me down, to lay me down
To lay me down one last time, to lay me down

To lie with you once more, to lie with you
With our dreams entwined together
To wake beside you, my love still sleeping
To tell sweet lies one last time and say goodnight

To lay me down, to lay me down
To lay me down one last time, to lay me down
To Lay Me Down

Phil was a very private kind of person. He didn't associate with many people who he believed were below him. He was an honor student in high school, a band geek. He never drank, never did drugs.

College changed things for Phil. He found out that he was no longer one of the smartest, and that it didn't always matter how smart you are, only how well you played the game. He gave up on college after that first year with a low C average. He couldn't get by on just being smart and didn't have what it took, or he decided the effort wasn't worth it. Either way, he left college with a desire to check out. He didn't want any part of a 'normal' lifestyle. He wanted to travel, to be happy and to live his life devoid of the grind of societal norms.

I was certainly open to the corruption of Phil. We became best of friends after he quit college. He and I enabled each other's drinking and drug habits. We also shared a deep desire to explore the unknown, to try and reveal the 'truth'. We would be apart of each others lives for a much shorter amount of time than we anticipated.

Phil came out of the bathroom wearing only his boxers. His hands lifted slightly out to each side, palms up. He had an incredulous look on his face and said in a pleading voice "So much stuff!!". "Why do I have all this stuff??" "What?" I said, my voice sounded like it was being sifted through mud coming from the depths of my gut.

"Why do I have all this stuff?? Wallet, pens, a notebook, a flashlight (yes he carried a flashlight most of the time), a phone, change....." he trailed off. Distracted by the sounds and visions around him. "Yeah, change.... I need a shower." I spun my chair around an told him to stop. "Stay OUT of the mirror" I said, calling out from the mine(mind)shaft across the room. He nodded in silence and walked back towards the bathroom.

"Wait, I need to pee. Can I pee??" I said. "Yeah" he said to me, confused. "No I need to pee!! Please...I need permission." We discussed my need for permission and my need to pee for a while, finally he agreed to give me permission, "Just pee dammit!! " said Red, so I did, although I neglected to actually move.

The warm embrace of urine coated my legs and lower torso. I enjoyed the freedom, the loss of every bit of fear, of every notion of self. I was floating on a wheeled ship of my own, my own planet, my sphere of influence, the 10 or so cubic feet of living room in which I would stay for an indeterminate amount of time.

A pistol shot at five o'clock
The bells of heaven ring
Tell me what you done it for
No I won't tell you a thing

Yesterday I begged you
Before I hit the ground
All I leave behind me
Is only what I found

If you can abide it
Let the hurdy gurdy play
Stranger ones have come by here
Before they flew away

I will not condemn you
Nor yet would I deny
I would ask the same of you
But failing, will not die

Take up your china doll
It's only fractured
Just a little nervous from the fall
La la la la la la la
China Doll

Red went back to his duties, grasping, pulling and arranging the imaginary items in the air above the couch. Phil went back into the bathroom, unsure of what he had just witnessed.

I remained...swiveling and listening. I fell into my mind and listened and thought. ....The Grateful Dead...why are the grateful?...I don't want to be with the dead, I want to live...I love life, it is so....colorful, it tastes so good...everything breathes. Everything breathes and everything listens, and I am one. I am one with the living and we are alive.

La la la la la la la
La la la la la la la

thanks for the inspiration...

300

No, not the movie, my blog!! It's my 300th post!!

Here's a link to #1, you go read it and so will I...

WOW...how things stay the same.

You may or may not be asking where the hell I've been. I have been on an online hiatus this month.

I have only played online twice since December 28th. I'm taking an extended break in order to retain what little sanity I have left.

I managed to play live again last weekend, playing some 6 handed SNG's with my buddies. Out of 5 games I won one and came in 2nd in another. Even Steven.

It looks like we will have our first installment of the APBT cash game this weekend at CC's house. I'm looking forward to some 'serious' poker and honest and open discourse following.

AHhhhh live poker rules. I have done my part so far this year, trying to play more live poker.

I've now played at PokerCats arena twice, in my 'hood once, and a trip up to Wall Street Poker, so 4 games in 2 weeks is awesome, but not a rate I will be able to keep up. I will be happy if I can play 2-4 times a month.

So in PokerCats arena we play a low-limit mixed game that I absolutely love. I REALLY enjoy playing a variety of games.

We throw in our share of Hold'Em and a healthy dose of OH/8 added to the mix is StudHi, Stud Hi/Lo, Razz, Pineapple, Crazy Pineapple, Bagdugi, and Triple Draw. Then we have the invented games of Northern Pineapple (4 cards and 2 rounds of discards), Double-Flop and reverse flop Omaha and Holdem, and BagduCi (triple draw split with a bagdugi hand).

Playing such a variety keeps me on my toes (sometimes). I got caught playing the lo in Omaha Hi on one hand last night. Despite my best efforts ( 3 buy ins) I managed to profit 2 1/2 buy-ins last night. I tend to play about %60+ of the hands dealt, so my results are expected to be a bit variancy. Its always a ton of fun though.

So we've been throwing out tentative plans for a regular $200 max Holdem cash game. Between myself, Kuro, Kaja, Surf, Weak, CC, BrainMc, and the various non blogging poker players each of us know we should be able to get a regular game going.

I'm shooting for twice a month starting in February. Each of us have the capability to host ( not sure about Weak), so we could rotate hosting duties.

An important addition to this series would be that we all would do our best to take notes and share ideas on some of the hands observed and played.

Of course the notes could (should) be posted on our blogs as to provide insight into thought processes and hopefully expand our abilities.

I think it could be an extremely useful tool in opening up each other's games. Your input is greatly appreciated.

Weekend Wrapup

Allo guys and dolls! I hope everyone had a good weekend of friends, family and whatever else you degenerates did.

My weekend started right with a little bit of poker. I ran 2 $20 tournaments with 11 players in my hood. The first game I played fairly well but got ran down by the chip leader with 4 players left.

I thought he he was making a big stack play and was surprised when he insta-called my push on the turn with a scary board (A4TK). I held KTs and put him on Ax. Unfortunately he held the case Kings.

In the second tourney my flopped mid straight - JTs on a 879 board got outran by AQd when he hit the flush on the river.

Cash is where it's at in my neighborhood game though and we played 1/2 Holdem NL and PLO/8. I ramped up quickly to a ~$150 profit. Somehow I managed to lose it all when the wild card games came out (as usual)

However, I turned my 2nd buy in to a $180 profit for the night and even made it home at a somewhat reasonable 2:30.

I then 'accidentally' logged into FT and played a couple SNG's to disasterous results despite my self imposed hiatus.

Saturday morning I managed to scrape myself out of bed at a reasonable time and took the kids for a hike.

By 5PM I was let out on good behavior to watch the games with some buddies at a nearby pub.

One of my good friends is from Wisconsin, so we had a good time cheering on the Packers. Then the damn Patriots don't cover the late game (DAMN YOU WES WELKER!). On the good side, the over was covered for both.

Sunday I got 2 more losses but still had hope for my longshot 4 over parlay. Too bad the Cowgirls stunk it up in the 2nd half. I take that back, both offenses stunk up the joint.

How can the Colts look themselves in the mirror this morning?? They lost to a practice squad in the second half?? Did the soul of Peyton Manning get switched with Brett Favre's??

So boo hoo, my football bets hit the fan, but it was a nice weekend. The wife and I finished it off by watching a PPV movie called Rescue Dawn.

I don't remember seeing any trailers or ads for this last summer, but it was surprisingly well acted and cinematically beautiful. It was worth the rental, especially with HD PPV.

Donkatopia

Yea! It's my monthly poker night in the donkahood. The worst part is I'm missign 'real' poker over at Kaja's house. Best part is, well donks + expendable $ = yay me.

Yes, sometimes I've been kicked in the junk in my neighborhood game, but I can usually count on a win in the 'hood. Wish me luck.

I'm still recovering from 3 days in New York, horribly poor sleep and a diet thart is making me grumpy 2-3 hours after eating.

I'm heading home a bit early so I can chill with the kids and mentally prepare for cards.

I hope you have a good weekend, and if you're like me and love to bet the playoffs, here are my picks:

Green Bay -7.5 AND Over 43

New England -13 AND Over 50

Indianapolis -9 AND Over 46

Dallas -7.5 AND Over 47

Yeah, all favorites and all Overs, I may be cliche' but at least I'm consistent. I'm betting the 4 games separate and will try to hit the longshot OVER parlay weeeee!

Wake up call

I came into WSP palace about 7:10, determined I would not be too early like last time. I was greeted by 3 unknown faces.

One belonged to the recently famous Rooster, one a WSP newcomer, and the other was Darko, a WSP regular. LJ was on the other side of the table as I walked in, standing next to Jamie.

After just a few minutes J, another WSP regular and Jordan came in. J horsed around with the Wii for a while and Rooster and Darko wanted to get it going.

I was downing my first of 2 energy drinks as I was dog tired from staying up too late drinking then working all day.

Eventually we got started and the action ramped up quickly as Joaquin was getting in the mix with large raises. About the 6th hand of the game I was dealt AKo and re-raised Joaquin $400 on a $150 raise. Blinds were 25-50.

I intended to buy the pot right there, but got called. The flop came with blanks and I bet out of turn. I honestly was not trying to shoot an angle or anything, I'm just an idiot. I managed to act out of turn one or two more times in the night. I'll just blame it on sake and lack of sleep.

Long story short, Joaquin folded, and I moved to muck my cards, but accidentally hit LJ's hand or arm and my cards were exposed. I can't decide if I just gained or lost respect, but oh well.

Shortly into the 2nd level LJ pushed AKo into Jaime's QQ and did not improve. She felt really bad and actually had work to do, so she left early.

Joaquin was having a tough time getting traction against a pretty tough table and ended up pushing A6h into my AKd. I managed to turn a K and Joaquin hung for a bit to deal for us.

Into the 3rd level I made a horrible preflop call vs Jordan. At the time I had a fairly healthy stack, only second to Jamie I believe. I re-raised in mid position with QJd. Jordan had made a min raise in front of me and I wanted to thin the herd.

Back around to Jordan and he pushes another ~2000. More than half my stack at the time. My brain completely forgot what to do. I couldn't put Jordan on anything, though looking back, it's obvious he was looking for a re-raise to push against.

Well, I just couldn't lay it down regardless of the fact that I'm clearly behind in this situation. At least I announced it was a bad call, but did it anyway and faced Jordan's QQ. I flopped a Jack, but diamonds were not my friend and I couldn't catch a 3rd Jack.

That hand really set me back and sent me spiraling. I went into push mode and managed to get some momentum in the 4th or 5th level.

I had another interesting hand vs Jamie when he made a big bet with AT and I pushed from the small blind with AJ. Too bad Carol wasn't there.
The flop came with AK5, then the T hit the turn, but I was saved by the K on the river. Suck resuck! woot.

Blinds were catching up to me, I bluffed Darko off a pot then he pushed the very next hand with 74d and I called my 99. Yeah, he caught 2 pair....awesome.

I still had a few chippies left but fate was not on my side as I pushed A5 against Jamie holding JJ. Despite the Ace on the flop he caught a 4 flush by the river and I was done.

Next we played NLHE for 2 orbits and 2-4 OH8 for 2 orbits in a rotation. I played well and got a few chips to play with, but I'm so passive in OH8, I managed to lose another $15.

I still call it a win, cause nothing beats having to go out of town on buisness and being able to meet up with friends and play cards, chat, and possibly get shitfaced on sake.

Cheers Folks! See you soon.

Bright Lights, Big City

When we last saw your hero he was deep in the grips of massive travel tilt.

Fast forward a few hours and your hero is calm and relaxed. It's amazing the effect a nice glass of scotch can do.

My esteemed host was nice enough to meet me in the lobby of my east side hotel. We slugged down the overpriced beer and headed towards Grand Central. We landed in a tucked away corner of Grand Central Station. The room was somewhat dim, with deep gold and garnet coloring. It had wooden accompaniments that were a mixture of middle-eastern or Moroccan with a turn of the century feel. I was under dressed.

I got back to my hotel room just an hour or so earlier and could not wait to get off the clothes I had been wearing all day. New York was unseasonably hot and I had been dressed for winter. Yes, a change of clothes was due.

I stood on the comfortable deep-ruby colored carpet and lightly sipped my 12 year old scotch in my jeans and t-shirt. At least I kept my dress shoes on. It was a nice peaty start to my semi-debaucherous night.

Our hostess arrived minutes later and the night began.

We finished our first drink and headed to the obligatory Irish pub close by. They had a decent crowd in the place, but it was easily one of the largest pubs I've been in in New York. They had Harp on tap and I was totally with it. I wub me some harp. 3 of those and a girly shot went down and my hosts had some really crappy looking bar food.

LJ was going on about a sushi and sake bar close by and I said....yum! lets go!

We wandered into this office building and headed to the basement, weirdest entry ever. Although there must be a location/coolness ratio formula for places in NY that I'm unaware of.
If its hard to find +coolness
Crazy Expensive ++ coolness
Similar Quality to what I can get in Cumming, GA at half the price -- coolness.

I keed, I keed.

It was a really nice place that happened to have the best snapper I've ever had. In retrospect, I just don't think you can possibly make a bottle of sake worth $100+. What do I know though, I'm a sake newb.

We proceeded to get good and lubricated and I luckily did not have to experience the waiter's horrible breath.

Now I know things are cooking, cause I'm forgetting details, but the last place we ambled to was another Irish pub on the way towards my hotel. More beers and shots were had and some evil person whipped out their camera, bad news. It is my goal to relieve said person of those pictures this evening.

I had a great time yapping it up and gallivanting through New York's east side with folks who know the ++cool places to go. Thanks LJ and f-train!!

I've got WSP starting in a mere 2 hours!! Wish me luck.

More later...

Mission Critical

So I arrive in NY again, with no one too meet me again. I'm used to this and have only been met by a car about 1/3 of the time I come here. No respect, I tells ya.

I'm a big boy though and I can get a damn cab myself, although it seem every time I get a cab (especially in Newark, the cabbie has no idea how the hell to get around NYC. What the fuck?

Why are you asking me how to get there dude?? isn't this your job?? How the hell can I use the shitty GPS in my blackberry to get me to where I want to go and you don't even have one?? Its sofaking stuupid!!! You know what the cabbie gets who finds my location and gets me there in a reasonable amount of time?? Thats right, a big phucking tip!

You know what you get Mr Cabbie who doesnt know how to drive or how to get there?? An angry freaking customer who just wants you to stop the freaking car so he can get out!!! CHEEZUS! Nearly every dam time I get in a cab..."which way you wanna go??" "I can take the Blah Blah express way or Whatthehell BLVD"

Just get me there as fast as you can you mental midget, DO YOUR EFFING JOB!

Ahh I feel better now. I'm tired, cranky, hungry, and bitter about everything now. I need to eat and have a tall cold one. Damn diet.!! aaarrrrghrgh.

OK, I dont feel better, but at least I vented and I'm in NY..... more later.

Vacation Synopsis and looking forward.

Almost 2 full weeks....ah it was so nice. I can't recall the last time I had that much time off from work. Seriously, I probably haven't had 2 weeks of not working since the early nineties...sad.

Anyway, I had a huge post in mind where I went over the festivities, but I just don't feel like composing all of it now. So I'll write a synopsis.

12/21 - Did all my Christmas shopping, met up with some old restauraunt buddies and got hammered.

12/22 - Recovery and Festivus Party, got plowed again.

12/23 - Recovery, Church, Present Wrapping, and Football.

12/24 - Food Prep, Mass, Christmas at the in-laws.

12/25 - Santa came, kids got lots of stuff, we had food at Rach's aunts house.

12/26 - My crew comes to dinner, I make the best Turkey EVAR, kids trash the house.

12/27 - I make turkey soup. We clean. I reschedule my 1/2 trip to NY, cause no one will actually be in my office.

12/28 - Family Poker night. We have lots of family over, I run a poker tournament, I'm gigli in the first one and Rach wins. I win the second one, then donk most of our winnings playing cash once I can't see straight.

12/29 - Recovery, Cleaning.

12/30 - Church, New Years Prep and my sister's girls spend the night. We are having people over AGAIN tomorrow!!?!

12/31 - Happy New Year!! I fall asleep on the couch while my wife subs for me in beer pong. Talk about degenerates...

1/1 - Recovery, Football. GA wins!!! So do I!!!!!

1/2 - I manage to make it to work, but don't actually do anything.

So there ya go..you think I might have a drinking problem!?!?!?! Nah.

I did get lots of quality time in with the kids, my wife, my friends, and my extended family. I truly enjoy the amount of time we spent entertaining.

My 2007 goals fell a bit short, here they were:

  1. Don't go broke. - This will be my biggest challenge since I tend to win, then donk and reload on a fairly regular basis. FAIL
  2. Win the Mookie and at least one WPBT event. - These are the only regular blogger tournaments I have not won. I won't count the DON's Big Game. FAIL, although I did take 2nd in a WPBT HORSE event and 3rd in a live blogger event.
  3. Attend a sanctioned blogger event. I'd really like to put some faces to names at some point. I need to win enough money to get to Vegas this summer, another big challenge tied to #1 goal. PASS! I went to Okie-Vegas which in my humble opinion is far cooler than regular Vegas.

So looking forward, I'm going to try a few things.

The past year of playing online has humbled me immensely. I finally have decided that I just can't beat it. It is simply not in me. The patience, the dedication, the study, the grind. I can't do it. I'm not wired right.

I do want to take my live play to a new level though. I want to make it less of a social escape and more of a study of psychology. I feel like I do have an edge over the typical player live. I can still tend to be wild, but I'm more connected to the game live and feel like I can more effectively operate that way.

As of right now I can't say whether I'll play online anymore, and I can't say I feel that bad about it. I currently have an agreement with the wife. She has always had problems with the amount of time I spend on the computer.

In the past I have ignored her needs and did what I wanted. I realize its not fair, and will begin to temper my desires and pay more attention to our relationship. Any good marriage takes time and commitment and I realize I have failed in my part in the past.

In that vein, we have started a "Biggest Loser" contest with some friends and family. We will have a contest to see who can improve their BMI by the most for the next 8 weeks.

I will finally have some motivation to eat better and shed 10 - 20 lbs. I'm getting older and my body isn't metabolizing food the way it used to. I simply can't keep eating like a pig, unless I want to be one. I'm too vain to let that happen, sorry.

So, Poker related Goals for 2008:

Increased successful live play and concrete bankroll tracking.
Attend Okie-Vegas.

Personal Goals for 2008:

Pay attention to diet and exercise - lose 20LBs and keep it off.
Give more time and effort to family.

Simple goals again, once I can get 2 -3 goals per year maybe I can expand.

I'll REALLY be in New York next Monday through Wednesday, so hopefully I can hook up with some of the New York crew while I'm there.

You all have a great New Year, see ya!

Merry Christmas!

Yeah, that's right I said it! Merry freaking Christmas, none of that no backbone, PC happy holidays crap. It's Christmas, haters be darned.

I hope everyone enjoys the company of family and friends this season, they are the greatest present you can receive.

I'm hosting Christmas dinner for my immediate family, my brother, sister, and a gaggle of kids. I'm honored and excited to warm my home with their love.

Peace be with you and yours. MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Some of you must appreciate how painful this is for me.

I chipped up nicely early on then made this questionable play in the third level.

peacecorn mucks [5d 5c] three of a kind, fives
iam23skidoo wins the pot (4,440) with a straight, Jack high.

I went on to die out in 14th again, just not playing anything. Then making really bad decisions with mid pairs.

Theres a quote floating in my head regarding donkeys changing their spots, but I don't have the energy to come up with it.

Nerves on high alert.

It all starts when you get about 4 hours of sleep.

You walk into a haphazard environment of fear, dejection, anticipation and curiosity. The only thing that anyone is sure of is that nothing is sure. Your leaders have gone, theres no direction only speculation and promises.

They Say:
"Nothing will change"
"This is good news"
"We are prepared to grow"

You hear:

"Everything will change"
"This is really bad news"
"We are fucked"

So I get to play in purgatory for an undefined time till things fall out in the watch.

I may need one of these:

earlier than expected.

On a side note I'll be headed up to the big apple Jan 2nd - 4th. YAY.

APBT II and weekend wrapup

Well, before I got too tipsy last night I promised Kat a somewhat coherent recap of the evening's events. I'm not sure if I can promise that now, but I'll give it a shot.

I'll set the table with my Friday night.

The wife and I were invited to wine club and we made it for the first time. I'm a closet wine snob so this was great for me. I spent 3 years as a wine steward at The Cloister in the early nineties.

We had a pacific northwest theme and I decided to focus on Willamette Valley. Oregon is Pinot country so I selected a Pinot Gris from King Estate (my families' vineyards wink wink)and Willlamette Valley Pinot Noir.

Of course I HAD to taste all 14 of the wines available and woke up Saturday morning with a massive wine hangover. LEMON

I was dragging ass, but I had a lot to do, so I cleaned up the basement and ran to the store. I also had to semi-entertain the kids cause the wife was writing a paper for her last final of the semester.

At about 5pm I called my buddy JewFro to help with the table, but his sister came into town early from Connecticut to dodge the horrible weather. Long story short, he could not come to the game OR help me get my table from the clubhouse. LEEEMMMOON

I proceeded to call everyone I know within a 10 mile radius and every single one of them was busy or not answering. Finally I got in touch with Todd and got him to come a little early to help carry my 1400 pound table.

Somehow upon getting the table into the van we ripped one of the legs out of the bottom of the table, however I was able to re-screw the leg back into the base.

Kajagugu, BrainMc, Surf, Sham and Gnome were at the house when we rolled up and got a good chuckle as Todd and I struggled with the table, but everyone pitched in with the chairs and getting the chips set up.

We chatted for a bit and waited on ChapelHill and if I remember correctly his uncle. I probably don't remember correctly as I could not remember his name, we decided to call him Buddy and he didn't mind at all.

I decided to go ahead and push the start back to 8:30 to let the our travelers make their way through the crappy weather and traffic. Eventually everyone had arrived and we ended up with 12.

Table 1 had Butch, Gnome, Doug ( a pokercats arena regular), ChapelHillnc, Buddy, and Kajagugu.

On table 2 we had Todd, Francase, Sham, Myself, Brain and George.

As you can see by the post yesterday I tried to design a structure to enable lots of play early on and added a rebuy to save for bad beats, such as the one ChapelHill had when his Aces were busted by threes.

All of the rebuy action was happening on table 1 with additional rebuys by Buddy and Kaja. The only rebuy on table 2 was Todd right near the end of the rebuy period. When I managed to dodge his straight and heart draws with a set of Kings.

All the other players made it through 3 levels and opted for the add-on. As I predicted, ChapelHill got Gigli when I believe his Queens were cracked shortly after the first break.

Kaja didn't make it much longer and we consolidated to one table. I've completely forgotten when and where we lost sham, but he was next out. Maybe it has something to do with the empty bottle of crown I have...

The final table had Brain in the 1 seat followed by buddy, todd, surf, gnome, francase, doug, dougs massive chip stack, me, and butch.

In the fifth round we lost 2 short stacks todd and francase with even more chips ending up in front of me....unfortunately doug had so many chips they were spilling over to me.

The double bubble lasted a long time while I slowly bled chips I could not get a single playable hand, the cards and chips were migrating to Doug and he was skillfully using both.

I got away from a big hand with george when I held AQ and completely missed the flop. he even showed me the Aces. I pushed with 45c and took the blinds and antes, then pushed again with 33 and got beat by surf's A6. Double bubble boy LEMON

Butch got the bubble and I joined the cash game. Here's the results:

A big congrats goes to Doug, I guess he is required to start a blog then.

More fun was had playing a cash game, Kaja stacked me then left, I took it out on gnome when I gambooled on a flush draw and hit. Sorry gnome, I really thought I was donating man. Everyone was good and tired and the group slowly disbanded, ending up around 2:30 or so.

I REALLY appreciate everyone who made it out. It was a horrible night to be driving, but I hope you all had a good time. I hope to see you again next year.

Here are some pics:

The final hand: the Kuro is no goot vs the AsianJew.

APBT II Structure

Sorry I didn't get to it yesterday, I was real busy.

We will be having a $25 Tournament beginning with 2600 chips.
Players are allowed one re-buy for $25 for 2600 chips if they go below T500
Players are eligible for an add-on for $25 for 2600 chips after the third level if they did not re-buy.

Here's a screenshot of the rounds:

I can add more rounds after that if need be. I'm probably not going to make a huge amount of food like last year, but I will have some snacks and beer.

See you tonight!

Sometimes you suck, sometimes you blow.

I managed to do both last night.

I played very well for the first half of the chasers last night staying in the top 15 or so for a long time. I made a move in position against an unknown player. Unfortunately he couldn't lay down mid pair and I went through the roof.

I don't know who boof diggity is, but I was a complete tool to him and I feel really bad about it. So anyway, if you happen to read this boof, I apologize for being a dick. I made a move and it didn't work.

I should know better, I've earned my loose-agg image and deserve to be called by ATC.

So there ya go..I feel better now.

APBT II is tomorrow and I am super stoked. I'll post the structure up in a bit.

APBT II Roll Call

Five days to go!! Sure, it's no Vegas but I am stoked to have a great group coming to sling some cards in north bumblefuck ATL.

First up, my friendly local bloggers and friends who have officially confirmed for the game.

23skidoo
Duh, it's my house. I've refined my own version of selective donkery, you'll never see me coming! I will have some sort of bounty on myself, I just haven't come up with anything yet.

surflexus
Surf is supremely gifted and is once again my pick to win in hopes that my horrible luck slides his way.

kajagugu
If you crack his aces watch out for the size 12 Israeli combat boots to your gullet. You have been warned.

traumapoker
Big balla' is coming this time..hide your wallet!!

BrainMc
Brian is tired of beating the noobs in his neighborhood so he has to test his mettle against the best. Maybe he should go to Tunica??

Butch Howard
Quiet, methodical, and deadly. Butch only comes from the confines of his home to put a beat down on bloggers. If he bets, run RUN FAST!

Todd D
Ex-blogger and the smartest guy at the table....just ask him!

Out-of-towners
the surly poker gnome
Mark is coming in from halfway around the world, what's your excuse for missing this??

ChapelHillInc
Other-wise known as TripJax's brother. He's a solid player who is a regular at the MOOK. Obviously my vote for Gigli.

The following have said yes or maybe but have not sent in the blood signed parchment.

mowenumdown
I've decided that Kelly is a Ninja or works for the CIA. If he hands you a drink, kindly pass.

sham
Sham once showed me a video of him making love to my wife, and it was the most beautiful thing I ever saw. Sham can drink his weight in Jager Bombs. Sham's shit is currency in Argentina. One of these statements is true!

kurokitty
Coming back to the ATL after final tabling the WPBT winter gathering. Wonder where he will observe more donkeys?

weak_player
Aaron's been a little busy lately with a new family member. He is prepared to show everyone he is a force to be weary of.

tripjax
He survives on Goat-cheese and Oil of Olay. Keep him away from livestock and small children!

CC
Craig has yet to admit that he invented Webkinz, aimed at bankrupting middle class families everywhere. I saw a notebook on his desk entitled World Domination: Phase 1 Complete.

Francase
Francase is secretly stalking all ATL bloggers in hopes of collecting scalps. Keep your hat on!

transfish
Aaron's wife, she's cute as a button and quiet, she will lull you to sleep and go for the kill.

The Dutch Oven -
Played last year and put on a clinic in the second game.

Mary - Butch's Wife
If I say something nasty about her I just may go directly to hell.

Obviously, if you do not see your name above and want to come, then drop me a line. I like the idea of at least 2 full tables, so if you want to bring a guest also let me know.

...or To there and back again...or donkey poker...or a week(end) wrap up.

When we last checked in with our hero he was headed to the largest city on earth to make his monthly visit and to call upon past acquaintances.

Acquaintances were met, drinks were consumed, donkey poker was played. All-in-all, a successful venture.

One is reminded time and time again of the tenuous nature of this game of chance one chooses as a hobby. Being enlightened, one can understand how little control one has over the turn of a card. Indeed, one can be virtually guaranteed to be aghast at decisions other players can make and be disheartened.

It rails against all knowledge of 'correct' and 'proper' etiquette a seasoned player observes when the uninitiated prevails over time honored 'truths'.

In these rare instances it is not in the best interest of the initiated to coach, direct or deride the mistake, but to learn and add to one's understanding in order to adjust future actions and reactions.

aaaanyway.....

I hope all the Vegas-bound bloggers enjoyed themselves this weekend. I further hope your brains and pocketbooks have remained in-tact.

I fixed a nice dinner for the wife on Saturday and enjoyed a peaceful kid-less meal with my beloved. It was truly the highlight of my weekend.

We went to 2 holiday parties this weekend, (whoo hooo)I drank until my equilibrium was diminished, then drank a little bit more.

What is old was new again and what was new is now old, the cycle turns and turns and turns...

I'll work on the APBTII roll-call tonight, it's shaping up to be a nice little tourney.

Weekend Wrap Up and ghey bloggers football

Hello Kids, the below post was a dedication to myself for Friday. I was and played like a drunken lemur, fun was had.

I made it over to Brain's neighborhood on Saturday to play in his neighborhood game. I was tired, and unfocused and got a last minute invite to a cash game in my hood..... Excuses excuses.

I didn't play too badly. I got flushed by a shortstack when I flopped presto, then over committed with QJs on a board with Q98 one spade. Brain took me down with KK.

I didn't necessarily want to wait for the cash game, so I high-tailed it back up north to my buddy Matts house. They weren't playing poker, they were playing beer-pong.

I had a great time watching the end of the football games and playing some pong. After awhile we walked over to Alan's and attempted to play some cards, but everyone was too drunk. They eventually just shipped their chips to me in fear...lol

I lazed around Sunday and watched the pros go at it, more fun was had..all in all a pretty low key weekend.

In Chad's blogger fantasy league I racked up the most points I have all season and I will need them heading into tonight's game. Don has Moss and NE's defense going tonight and he is about 50 points behind me. Normally I'd be happy, but you just never know with Moss and the horrible Raven's offense. Wish me luck.
