Cooooler

Hello from 23skidoo land intrepid readers!

Everything is fairly normal around here, I finally got some fundage in my dwindling account again and we will wait with baited breath in anticipation of more stackage.

I played a tighter than usual 2 table peep yesterday afternoon and floundered around 10th, then took a shot on a 6 dollar version and took it down, peeping into the HOY

The tourney transpired like most of my MTT's lately. My timing seems to be off or something. In an interesting twist of fate, my tourney started and ended with the hammer.

First hand I'm dealt the hammer EP and smell an easy steal. I pop it up to 180 and get one caller, but the cagey dwarf made it over 400 in the BB and I had to dump it. I played my usual brand of loose/weak for almost an hour until I made my stand with the hammer and got sucked out by Aces....donkeys.

I popped into another token tourney and saw Jordan there. I played fast and loose and made the final table as chip leader, but I kept playing like a donkey and went out on 7th.

To end the night I made my buy-ins back playing .25/.50 HORSE and RAZZ.

Talk about free money....

I'm off to the BIG CITY at the crack of freaking dawn tomorrow for a whirlwind tech support and poker visit. I'll be hooking up with the aforementioned Jordan on Thursday, and whoever else we can scare up in NY for the Salami game. Hopefully I can keep up with my NY successes and bring home more money than I leave with.

I'll try to have a trip report up before Monday and I'll do my best to make the MOOK and Kat's friday tourney.

Fifth Street Blues

OK, Let me try this again, not that this is interesting in the least, but one must keep up appearances lest one fall off the face of the earth.

To explain, I write my posts in textpad copy, paste and edit them in blogger. Works like a charm 99.999% of the time for me. I was extremely busy yesterday, so I wrote my post, cut the text and pasted into blogger and submitted. I flip to another tab in firefox and I notice after awhile the little round busy dealy is still spinning on the blogger page. I go back to discover a blank page....ugh. No problem, I can just paste back into textpad and repeat. WRONG. I had copied a link, thus losing my post. So I have to place a small bit of blame on myself for being impatient.

Lesson Learned.

As I was trying to say, Friday was poker night in my donkahood, we played 11 handed for the first tourney and split to 2 tables of 6 for the second. I played very tight (yeah right) in the tourneys and got sucked upon in both of them, and no... no reach around was offered or anything, just pure un-adulterated fonkeyness to which BUTCH can attest.

I had the situations laid out in my other post, but now it doesn't matter. I put my chips in ahead in both circumstances and was thrown the doom switch by live cards. Bubble boy in the first tourney and 6th in the second.

Afterwards we played 1/2 limit in which I further offered my rectum for punishment.

Now isn't that a pleasant vision?

I had some more clever things to say or at least one clever thing, but I forgot.

I'm running near empty again on FT, go figure..I take more swings than Ann Heche and Mike Tyson combined.

I'll be in New York next week, but I'm not sure if I'll have time for social behavior. On the off chance, Thursday would be the night I could possibly do a meet and greet with fellow bloggers and possibly throw some cards around time permitting. So drop me a line if you might find yourself in the city without plans on the 26th.

and Hey! You be careful out there*

*my lame ass attempt at a tag line ala G-cox. sad aint it?

BREAKING NEWS!

wait for it.....

I'm a donk!!!! Who'd a thunk it???

Yeah, I suppose this isn't news to a great deal of you. But I think I am uniquely gifted at giving away money at the poker table. On the plus side I'm a pretty fun guy to be around, especially if I'm facing you at the tables where I just open up my little pockets for you to take what's mine. That said, knowing is half the battle, and I'll keep battling it until i run out of freely spendable income (which may happen VERY soon).

So in that vein, you ATL folks feel free to come get some of my hard earned cash tonight!!

If you didn't already get an e-mail, let me know and I'll send you the particulars.

In Dreams

I don't often have vivid dreams, and when I do I can only recall images or feelings.

Last night I had a dream. I woke up around 5AM disturbed and started to recall it. It was a familiar setting and one I've had in many dreams.

My Grandmother's house.

The house where my father grew up was in a large, heavily wooded neighborhood in between the marshes of Glynn county and downtown Brunswick.

Brunswick started as one of the five original ports of entry for the 13 colonies. It serves as a hub for car imports as well as wood pulp products. One thing visitors notice immediately is the smell. There is a thick mixture of heavy sea air, shrimp, and wood processing that hangs on the whim of the wind, which there is plenty.

My grandparents built the small, but comfortable house on an acre of flat land which held some of the best climbing oaks known to boy-dom. I spent several weeks of nearly every summer vacation in the house with my grandparents, usually joined by my cousin John who is only one year younger than myself. His older brother called my grandmother Gan, my grandfather was Dado. Being the oldest, he got naming rights on the grandparents, so the names stuck.

When my father decided to quit the rat race and buy a business on St. Simons island, just across the marsh, he bought the house from my grandmother and moved his new family there. I was begrudgingly moved from Atlanta into a house with my 2nd step-mother and her 2 daughters.

There are plenty of memories wrapped up in that setting, both bad and good. I did an awful lot of growing up in that house, so I suppose my mind retreats there when it's feeling lazy. Its a comfortable backdrop.

I've been trying to piece the memory of this dream together, and it seems trivial, but the fact is that it didn't feel trivial when I woke up mid-slumber at 5AM.

I was sitting in Gan's tiny kitchen. I knew it was Gan's kitchen because the old refrigerator was there. One of those bulbous 50's 'friges with the huge silver-chrome pull handles on it.

I was sitting on the floor with my wife and someone else. I tugs at my brain trying to figure out the other person there since they were central to my comfort (or lack of it) in the situation.

Behind me, there was a large pot of boiling water, steaming into the air with the screams of crabs. I used to think it was screaming when I was a kid, and I liked it in a sadistic kid-like way.

Back in the day, John and I would get our crab traps, three or 4 packs of chicken necks and a bucket. We'd walk down to the marsh when the tide was just beginning to wane, and we'd pull plenty of crabs out of the water to fill the bucket before we could see the muddy bottom of the marsh.

We'd proudly present our bucket to Gan and she'd boil 'em up for us. To this day, I have never had crab that good.

My wife and I were having a light discussion, sitting on the floor, when the phone rang. We didn't pick up the phone though. We let it ring till the answering machine picked up. There was a long pause and a smallish girl spoke. She left a message for me, but I did not recognize the voice.
The third person and I had an animated discussion surrounding the phone call. It was as if I was blaming the third person for the discomfort the call and the message caused.

What's strange is I remember the name, and when I woke up this morning, I remembered most of the number. What i remember most of all is the feeling of betrayal and anger I had after the call.

The problem is that I have no idea why I was mad...perhaps upset is a better description.

In the dream I tried to reason why this person would call me and leave a message. I remember looking at the number on the Caller ID and it was different than the one given in the message. Why would she try to lie? Too many questions, and I was anxious.

I wish I could remember more, which is the crux of most of my dreams. I remember images and feelings but never specifics.

I do know that this morning I checked the caller ID on my phone, but there was nothing from last night/this morning. I also had the distinct feeling that things were out of place.

If I was a better writer, I'd have a clever device to put this together and make it coherent, but I just felt like getting the feeling down so I could try to get to the root of it.

I'm coming up sort of empty right now, and I'm going to choose to ignore any blatant commitment/marriage/faith issues in some random girl leaving a message for me on the phone. The girl is a red herring for the feeling I woke up with.

I just cant put my finger on it.

Drunken donkery with 23skidoo...

By no means do I want to make light of my frame of mind at times. It does scare me that I put myself into stupid situations especially in regards to gambling in general and more specifically in Poker.

One thing I do know about myself is that I lack control of myself in times when control is most needed...When I am drinking.

The kind folks at Full Tilt were gracious enough to forward my hand history to me, so I could revel in my stupidity. I played about 400 hands last Thursday....nutty eh?

What I found when looking through my hand history is that occasionally the gods will smile on you and take pity.

Thursday was such a night for your truly. I had no business playing cards but it worked out. I went through the history looking for logic, but what I found was pure loose passive play. Somehow it happened to work.

So I earmarked some hands I found interesting and tried to channel the donk within who was playing from my body on Thursday. Feel free to weep, laugh, or completely ignore it.

I played a bit of OH8 No limit and made some good money. Here's a hand that established a running theme:

It is true, Donkeys CAN fly!! Certainly I'll give it back, its just a matter of time.

Panic on the streets

After a few cocktails, I decided it was best just to head back to the hotel. I paid my tab and started walking down the street. Well, I thought to myself it might be a good idea to see if I could find a place to get a 6-pack and maybe rent a movie to pass out to.

I get to Fifth Avenue and take a look to the left. I see a line of folks coming out of a building a little ways down, so I naturally decide to investigate. I walk down the avenue, visions of seeing the beautiful people packed in a trendy New York club. I get a half block away and realize its a bunch of sheeple standing outside the Empire State Building.

No worries, cause there was a CVS close by. I wanted a smoke and to see if I could make the 6-pack thing happen. Low and behold CVS had cold single beers and 12 packs.....what's a thirsty boy to do? Duh, go for the twelver of course!

I decided at that point that it may just be a long night for me. I grabbed the drinks and smokes and head back to the confines of my room. I noticed on the way in that there was a large contingent of folks going in and out of the place across the kabob place. I registered it for some reason, thinking it was strange.

Back in the cool closet disguised as a hotel room, I fired up the TV and browsed around. I didn't feel like a movie, or TV, or even Nintendo.

I couldn't resist much longer....I needed cards to complete my holy trinity of degeneracy.

I slipped on my slippers, stashed a beer in my pocket with my smokes and head outside. For some reason I had it in my mind that there were shenanigans afoot at the Kabob place. I really wanted to check it out.

I stepped outside and strolled down the block sipping my beverage and dragging off the cig. I took a conspicuous spot across the street and watched.

Lots of cab drivers coming in and out..they were just getting food. Why the heck was this place packed?? I couldn't resist. I finished the beer and head across the street into a heavy curry fog.

I didn't take me long to figure out I was wrong. I walked past the food counter into a room with several televisions on the wall. Here all the guys sat, talking in their native tongues. Few took notice of me, but I was fairly freaking sure there were no cards going on here, and if there was; I was not on the guest list.

So I turned and realized I had to save face to the imaginary people that were now watching me. I had to order some food, and did, even though I had no intention of eating it.

I quickly paid then fled to the relative safety of my hotel room. There was no way out, I 'needed' to play some cards now, I had no choice. I fired up the old laptop and downloaded FT for the umpteenth time on this laptop.

I unfortunately forgot to save any hand histories of my play, does anyone know of a way to get hand histories from FT if you did not select to save them? I e-mailed support, but who knows if I'll get a response.

Anyway, I played in a $10 and a $20 SNG, and got 3rd in the $10, but I was bored and feeling frisky, so I decided to look for a cash game.

In my stupor, I decided to fire up the 8/16 HORSE table that had Keith Sexton on it. There were only 5 people there when I sat, with rolls between $150 and $500. I joined in with 300 just to play a few hands for the hell of it.

I can only imagine I was playing wild and loose, because I distinctly remember betting off several hands and taking some fairly good pots. I remember thinking to myself that I would get caught eventually and would have to leave.

I racked up about twice my buy in and Richard "the Quiet Lion" Brodie joined in. I don't remember any chat, as I was half way finished with my CVS purchase. I racked up to over a grand at the table and cashed out around $825. The angles were smiling on me I suppose.

If I get any sort of hand history, I'll have to go through it, 'cause I honestly can't remember any hands I played....pretty sad huh?

I guess thats all for now, but I am chomping at the bit to play more cards, but I have to try and wait just a little longer.

Weekend wrap-up

I'm still dehydrated.

My weekend started on Thursday morning at 4:45AM. I turned the alarm off and drug my feet to the shower. It took a few minutes to register that the water was about 15 degrees too hot and I cowered to the corner of my shower stall. I eventually regained the feeling in my feet and wiped away the 4 hours of sleep from my eyes.

Ten minutes or so later I dried off and donned my travel gear. T-shirt, long sleeve shirt and wool jacket. I'd be leaving the humid comfort of Georgia to too-cold Airports and too warm airplanes only to arrive in the gawky in-between days of winter to spring in New York. I had to be prepared for the 50's while dressing in the 70's.

I got my comfy shoes, laptop bag, kissed the wife and kids in their slumber and headed to the busiest airport in the world. I cut it a little close on this occasion, only giving myself a little over an hour to get there and make it to the gate. I pulled into the airport with plenty of time to spare, but got caught in the drudgery of a just opening security check. I suppose they always get a bit backed up in the morning.

I got through the line on the way in and had my ticket checked by the Angel Lady. The Angel Lady has worked at the Airport for a while. I heard her talking sweetly to the passengers in front of me. She was a smaller black woman with tightly curled hair high on her head. I would say she was in her 50's but very well could have been north of that given the wrinkles around her always smiling mouth. She called everyone by their name and I dubbed her the Angel Lady since she was so sweet and had about 4 angels stuck to her sweater. I got up to her in line and I told her I liked her angels. She said " Oh thank you darlin', you know I didn't buy one of these charms. They were given to me by passengers" I told her it must be because she was such an angel. She laughed and shooed me away to the security gate.

I'm bringing an angel charm with me the next time I go to the airport.

I went straight to my seat as they were boarding the last few rows, my luck held out though as the plane was only half full and I had three seats to myself. I fell back to sleep before the plane took off.

The last time I came to New York, we had a limo waiting on us, this time I was alone, and decided to try the train. It wasn't too bad, even though I had no idea where I was going. I trusted the info I pulled from the crackberry was accurate, and it was. I got into Penn station and decided to try and check in to my room. The place I was staying was only a few blocks away, and I needed to get the blood moving. I knew going to the hotel first was a risk, being a bit before 10, but I wanted to relieve myself of some luggage and splash some warm water on my face.

The walk was good, but I was denied entry, aww fuckit. I hopped in a cab and headed to the office.

As I feared, the actual emergency took about 10 minutes to fix. There was plenty more for me to do though. I tried convincing Jordan to meet me at the salami game, but he was warmed up to the wife. I briefly entertained the possibility of going there on my own, but decided against it. I'm such a wuss.

I decided an early dinner and some rest was a better plan, I should actually know better than thinking thats going to happen for me, but I told myself at the time that I'd be good.

I arrived at the hotel around 7:15 and checked in. They tried to give me a hard time about using the wife's card, but I used the jedi mind trick on them and they left me alone. The secret to using the trick is to remain calm. If you keep your angle, and never let them fluster you, they will cave.

I flopped on to the bed and let my feet bark for a bit. I washed them off and changed socks. Total key to refreshing yourself right there. Clean dry feet and new socks.....works like a charm.

I already knew where I was going to eat. I had passed the Irish pub 3 times, and it spoke to me. You can virtually guarantee decent service in an irish pub, I like to sit at the bar, and the bartenders are usually good for at least casual conversation.

I forget the name, but it was packed, as I gather every place in NY is, with after workers getting their drunk on and shooting the shit. I was lucky enough to get a spot at the end of the bar, right next to the wait station. I don't mind so much since I spent a fair part of my life working in bars and restaurants. I get a good idea of how its going to go after a few minutes by checking out the clientele, the waitstaff and the initial greeting from the bartender. He says hi less than thirty seconds after I have sat, despite being slammed. Excellent. I think to myself. Bartenders should know that the counter customer can be their best, or worst. I knew which one I was, so when I asked for a shot of Johnny Walker, and he filled a small rocks glass nearly to the rim. I knew I'd be fine here.

My bartender's name was Michael, I said hello to him, and shook his hand. I had a salad and fish and chips to eat. The food sucked, but I didn't care. The second scotch was on the house. This is where things slowly start going south for your hero.

I'll finish part 2 later on tonight or tomorrow.

SPOILER ALERT: I played HORSE with not 1 but 2 known pro's.
