Maniac Monday

It started off like many Mondays in the past, however I haven't played much online poker for the month. I found the TuckFard open and watched for a bit. Al mentioned a low stakes horse match, and that sounded like a great tune up. I was having a pretty good time until CK rivered a frush on me in stud. I blew out pretty quickly in last place.

Unfulfilled, I fired up a Token tourney and $10 HU, and took out a very weak opponent. The token went well and I decided that if I could win another one before the MATH, I'd play that and the 28K. Mission accomplished.

You can see in the post below how the 28K went. 2 hours of solid play and a suckout yay!

The first few rotations of the 6max MATH I got some nice starting hands and I knew my action would be perceived as a little loose. I was making odd bets and trying to dodge and weave.

This is the first hand where my image served me well, even though I had to suck out.

6 Of us gathered in CC's poker room about 8:15. The players included myself, CC, Kuro, Francase, Butch and my buddy Ben.

We played several orbits of 1/2 NLHE. As predicted, Ben played the aggressive role. I was getting some trash hands and attempting to play them....poorly. I dropped nearly half a buy in playing some speculative at best hands.

I intended to take notes, but decided not to since we were short handed, Ben suggested we throw in some mixed games, and everyone agreed.

I dropped the rest of my buy in on a nut flush redraw on a tricky board. I had Ac3cKdQh, the board had 2 clubs Jx and Ax. I'm pretty sure there was no low draw. Ben made 2 strong bets pre and post flop. I incorrectly put him on a weaker hand and he called my push with JJxx. He dodged my outs and I went digging.

After that I tried to get myself in lockdown mode, but you know I'm a donk. I stayed relatively level as we were playing more stud type games, limiting the pots somewhat.

My highlight of the night was catching my open ender on the turn in pineapple vs Francase and stacking him. I wasn't able to get my buy in back, but I had a great time with the competition and the mixture of games.

I really hope we can keep this up, I honestly believe there is hope for me if I can limit some of the stupid mistakes I make.

So, lets throw some dates out for February. Friday the 5th is my Neighborhood game, other than that I'm relatively open. Perhaps we can play on a week night too. I can host anytime, I can drive too, so lets start throwing out some options men!

The full moon theory

Phil had a theory. See, he had studied fungus at UGA for two semesters and thought he had a good grasp on the stuff we were eating. "I bet you they follow the phase of the moon!" he said, and it made complete sense to me.

We rode up to our buddy Red's land on the north end of the island, just as we had done every week or so for the past few months. Red's mom owned a horse stable on the north end. The sons and daughters of the island's rich boarded their prize thoroughbreds along side the not so rich folks nags.

The property had four grazing pens, two walking arenas, a polo field and a large unused field that connected to a wooded area that Red's mom let us build our paint-ball installations. All told his family probably had about 20 acres or so dedicated to the stables.

We drove up to the first gate, lights off. We had to avoid the caretaker's little house at the head of the property and walk to our destination, bags and unlit flashlights in hand.

About a quarter mile down the dirt road, we had to make a left to the trail we had built and hidden a few weeks prior. The new trail eventually connected to a series of trails we had made encircling our makeshift paint-ball village. From there we gently walked to the northernmost grazing area.

We got to the open field and put away our flashlights. Three days before the full moon and a crystal clear night in October was all the light we needed to see our crop. The ground was pocked with white-grey spheres, trying to mimic the stars. This was the mother-load.

Three days was the morning.
My focus three days old.
My head, it landed to the sounds of cricket bows...
I am proud man anyway...
Covered now by three days...
Three Days

On a normal night to this point we were able to seek out and find 5 to 10 good mushrooms to pick. We giddily galloped through the field picking samples as small as a pencil and as large as a baby's hand. Eventually, we just left about half of the crop to shrivel and die in the next morning's heat. That first full-moon theory night we filled 3 garbage bags full of them. Yes we picked mushrooms out of horse manure. Free of charge with more than adequate amounts of psilocybin .

We got back to the Condo, our little Ocean Side place that also belonged to Red's family. All three of us lived there at the time. Red was intermittently working in Film and Commercial shoots as a grip, best boy, and PA. He naturally had the master bedroom. Phil and I worked as wine stewards in one of the most prestigious resorts in the world. Phil had the smaller room and I slept on my futon in the dining room, in the middle of the place. For what I lacked in privacy I gained a prime space on the island with little rent. I was willing to make the trade off. Besides, the frequent times Red was out of town I got the master suite.

We commenced calling everyone we could think of to partake with us. We found no one.

Given we all had limited experience with dosage, we decided to make a vat of tea with the contents of one of the bags. We still planned on having some people over, so we wanted to have plenty.

If you've ever tasted mushrooms, you'll know that it leaves much to be desired. Instead of drinking tea, we decided to make Cherry Kool-Aid mushroom tea, with plenty of sugar. By the time we gave up on anyone else joining our 'tasting' we had about 2 gallons of tea and the smushed up remnants of about 1 or 2 pounds of freshly picked mushrooms.

Early in the summer, Phil and I had attended an auction. It was one of those auctions where the owners of the storage units would open up the door and start the bidding on the contents. One of the items we won that day was a large box of plastic Pepsi cups, like a big gulp from 7-11.

We agreed to one big gulp full of tea apiece, then give it an hour and see where we were. Shortly after I finished my big gulp, I took a pinch of mushroom remnants and chewed on those too. Red and Phil followed suit. Shortly after that, we agreed to drink another half cup apiece.

I sat on the swivel chair in front of the TV and waited. Red and Phil suited up for a walk outside. We were going to stroll down to the beach once we started to feel the effects.

In a matter of minutes, my stomach felt heavy, but not sick heavy. I remember the feeling of my esophagus, arid and empty. I didn't feel like throwing up, but I breathed, mouth open as the warm sensation emanated from my mid section. Once the drug started kicking in, I felt like I was yawning all night, gasping for air. I remember loving the sweet taste of the ocean air, and the reciprocal feeling of drowning in it.

We sat there in the living room, silent. My body felt like a brick and I needed to break the spell. We agreed to move, and walked out the side entry to the beach access two floors below.

We reached our first obstacle, the rocks. During high-tide the water laps at the rocks for hours depositing trash, dead stuff, and crabs. At night, the palmetto bugs come to pick through the trash and dead things, the crabs would scurry about, picking them off.

As we walked towards the rocks they seemed to teem with life, the dance of shadows and light made the rocks crawl with real and imaginary fiends. We made our way quickly and gingerly over the rocks to the dampened beach. The tide was receding, bearing the smooth, rippled beach under the moonlight in front of us.

I tried to gather my walk to a sprint down the unearthly terrain westward toward the marshes and away from the prying moon. I came to realize quickly that my legs weren't going to comply, in fact I realized that it was very hard to balance at all. The wet beach stretched out in front of me and breathed like the belly of some great sea serpent. I fell flat on my stomach then rose to my hands and knees and balanced against the undulating terrain.

I laughed, Red and Phil were behind me laughing too. Huge spectre-like grins on their faces. "This is too much" said Dave. "Too much input!" I rolled onto my back and looked up at the stars, dancing, vibrating in a rainbow of colors. I agreed, a controlled environment would be best.

We ambled back the roughly 400 Feet we had made it out of our little cocoon, and flopped down in the living room. I regained the swivel chair that would witness the most swiveling it had ever enabled in a five hour period. Phil got the over sized chair and ottoman, Red laid down on the couch.

I managed to flip on the CD player, found Reckoning, and hit repeat.

Over the course of the next few hours we talked sparing, incoherent sentences and moved little. Phil disappeared to the bathroom for what seemed like an eternity. Red laid on the couch, his hands would occasionally reach up to move the air, or an imaginary item. "The colors...its so huge I can taste it." He said.

I sat on my chair and swiveled, I kept moving because the room was burning images into my retina, the whole Condo was creating shadow effects on my vision. I constantly blurred my vision in order to keep focus. I needed to listen to the music. It was so fragile and beautiful.

To lay me down once more, to lay me down
With my head in sparkling clover
Let the world go by, all lost in dreaming
To lay me down one last time, to lay me down

To be with you once more, to be with you
With our bodies close together
Let the world go by, like clouds a-streaming
To lay me down one last time, to lay me down

To lay me down, to lay me down
To lay me down one last time, to lay me down

To lie with you once more, to lie with you
With our dreams entwined together
To wake beside you, my love still sleeping
To tell sweet lies one last time and say goodnight

To lay me down, to lay me down
To lay me down one last time, to lay me down
To Lay Me Down

Phil was a very private kind of person. He didn't associate with many people who he believed were below him. He was an honor student in high school, a band geek. He never drank, never did drugs.

College changed things for Phil. He found out that he was no longer one of the smartest, and that it didn't always matter how smart you are, only how well you played the game. He gave up on college after that first year with a low C average. He couldn't get by on just being smart and didn't have what it took, or he decided the effort wasn't worth it. Either way, he left college with a desire to check out. He didn't want any part of a 'normal' lifestyle. He wanted to travel, to be happy and to live his life devoid of the grind of societal norms.

I was certainly open to the corruption of Phil. We became best of friends after he quit college. He and I enabled each other's drinking and drug habits. We also shared a deep desire to explore the unknown, to try and reveal the 'truth'. We would be apart of each others lives for a much shorter amount of time than we anticipated.

Phil came out of the bathroom wearing only his boxers. His hands lifted slightly out to each side, palms up. He had an incredulous look on his face and said in a pleading voice "So much stuff!!". "Why do I have all this stuff??" "What?" I said, my voice sounded like it was being sifted through mud coming from the depths of my gut.

"Why do I have all this stuff?? Wallet, pens, a notebook, a flashlight (yes he carried a flashlight most of the time), a phone, change....." he trailed off. Distracted by the sounds and visions around him. "Yeah, change.... I need a shower." I spun my chair around an told him to stop. "Stay OUT of the mirror" I said, calling out from the mine(mind)shaft across the room. He nodded in silence and walked back towards the bathroom.

"Wait, I need to pee. Can I pee??" I said. "Yeah" he said to me, confused. "No I need to pee!! Please...I need permission." We discussed my need for permission and my need to pee for a while, finally he agreed to give me permission, "Just pee dammit!! " said Red, so I did, although I neglected to actually move.

The warm embrace of urine coated my legs and lower torso. I enjoyed the freedom, the loss of every bit of fear, of every notion of self. I was floating on a wheeled ship of my own, my own planet, my sphere of influence, the 10 or so cubic feet of living room in which I would stay for an indeterminate amount of time.

A pistol shot at five o'clock
The bells of heaven ring
Tell me what you done it for
No I won't tell you a thing

Yesterday I begged you
Before I hit the ground
All I leave behind me
Is only what I found

If you can abide it
Let the hurdy gurdy play
Stranger ones have come by here
Before they flew away

I will not condemn you
Nor yet would I deny
I would ask the same of you
But failing, will not die

Take up your china doll
It's only fractured
Just a little nervous from the fall
La la la la la la la
China Doll

Red went back to his duties, grasping, pulling and arranging the imaginary items in the air above the couch. Phil went back into the bathroom, unsure of what he had just witnessed.

I remained...swiveling and listening. I fell into my mind and listened and thought. ....The Grateful Dead...why are the grateful?...I don't want to be with the dead, I want to live...I love life, it is so....colorful, it tastes so good...everything breathes. Everything breathes and everything listens, and I am one. I am one with the living and we are alive.

300

No, not the movie, my blog!! It's my 300th post!!

Here's a link to #1, you go read it and so will I...

WOW...how things stay the same.

You may or may not be asking where the hell I've been. I have been on an online hiatus this month.

I have only played online twice since December 28th. I'm taking an extended break in order to retain what little sanity I have left.

I managed to play live again last weekend, playing some 6 handed SNG's with my buddies. Out of 5 games I won one and came in 2nd in another. Even Steven.

It looks like we will have our first installment of the APBT cash game this weekend at CC's house. I'm looking forward to some 'serious' poker and honest and open discourse following.

Cat-skillz

AHhhhh live poker rules. I have done my part so far this year, trying to play more live poker.

I've now played at PokerCats arena twice, in my 'hood once, and a trip up to Wall Street Poker, so 4 games in 2 weeks is awesome, but not a rate I will be able to keep up. I will be happy if I can play 2-4 times a month.

So in PokerCats arena we play a low-limit mixed game that I absolutely love. I REALLY enjoy playing a variety of games.

We throw in our share of Hold'Em and a healthy dose of OH/8 added to the mix is StudHi, Stud Hi/Lo, Razz, Pineapple, Crazy Pineapple, Bagdugi, and Triple Draw. Then we have the invented games of Northern Pineapple (4 cards and 2 rounds of discards), Double-Flop and reverse flop Omaha and Holdem, and BagduCi (triple draw split with a bagdugi hand).

Playing such a variety keeps me on my toes (sometimes). I got caught playing the lo in Omaha Hi on one hand last night. Despite my best efforts ( 3 buy ins) I managed to profit 2 1/2 buy-ins last night. I tend to play about %60+ of the hands dealt, so my results are expected to be a bit variancy. Its always a ton of fun though.

So we've been throwing out tentative plans for a regular $200 max Holdem cash game. Between myself, Kuro, Kaja, Surf, Weak, CC, BrainMc, and the various non blogging poker players each of us know we should be able to get a regular game going.

I'm shooting for twice a month starting in February. Each of us have the capability to host ( not sure about Weak), so we could rotate hosting duties.

An important addition to this series would be that we all would do our best to take notes and share ideas on some of the hands observed and played.

Of course the notes could (should) be posted on our blogs as to provide insight into thought processes and hopefully expand our abilities.

I think it could be an extremely useful tool in opening up each other's games. Your input is greatly appreciated.

Weekend Wrapup

Allo guys and dolls! I hope everyone had a good weekend of friends, family and whatever else you degenerates did.

My weekend started right with a little bit of poker. I ran 2 $20 tournaments with 11 players in my hood. The first game I played fairly well but got ran down by the chip leader with 4 players left.

I thought he he was making a big stack play and was surprised when he insta-called my push on the turn with a scary board (A4TK). I held KTs and put him on Ax. Unfortunately he held the case Kings.

In the second tourney my flopped mid straight - JTs on a 879 board got outran by AQd when he hit the flush on the river.

Cash is where it's at in my neighborhood game though and we played 1/2 Holdem NL and PLO/8. I ramped up quickly to a ~$150 profit. Somehow I managed to lose it all when the wild card games came out (as usual)

However, I turned my 2nd buy in to a $180 profit for the night and even made it home at a somewhat reasonable 2:30.

I then 'accidentally' logged into FT and played a couple SNG's to disasterous results despite my self imposed hiatus.

Saturday morning I managed to scrape myself out of bed at a reasonable time and took the kids for a hike.

By 5PM I was let out on good behavior to watch the games with some buddies at a nearby pub.

One of my good friends is from Wisconsin, so we had a good time cheering on the Packers. Then the damn Patriots don't cover the late game (DAMN YOU WES WELKER!). On the good side, the over was covered for both.

Sunday I got 2 more losses but still had hope for my longshot 4 over parlay. Too bad the Cowgirls stunk it up in the 2nd half. I take that back, both offenses stunk up the joint.

How can the Colts look themselves in the mirror this morning?? They lost to a practice squad in the second half?? Did the soul of Peyton Manning get switched with Brett Favre's??

So boo hoo, my football bets hit the fan, but it was a nice weekend. The wife and I finished it off by watching a PPV movie called Rescue Dawn.

I don't remember seeing any trailers or ads for this last summer, but it was surprisingly well acted and cinematically beautiful. It was worth the rental, especially with HD PPV.

Yea! It's my monthly poker night in the donkahood. The worst part is I'm missign 'real' poker over at Kaja's house. Best part is, well donks + expendable $ = yay me.

Yes, sometimes I've been kicked in the junk in my neighborhood game, but I can usually count on a win in the 'hood. Wish me luck.

I'm still recovering from 3 days in New York, horribly poor sleep and a diet thart is making me grumpy 2-3 hours after eating.

I'm heading home a bit early so I can chill with the kids and mentally prepare for cards.

I hope you have a good weekend, and if you're like me and love to bet the playoffs, here are my picks:

Green Bay -7.5 AND Over 43

New England -13 AND Over 50

Indianapolis -9 AND Over 46

Dallas -7.5 AND Over 47

Yeah, all favorites and all Overs, I may be cliche' but at least I'm consistent. I'm betting the 4 games separate and will try to hit the longshot OVER parlay weeeee!

Wake up call

I came into WSP palace about 7:10, determined I would not be too early like last time. I was greeted by 3 unknown faces.

One belonged to the recently famous Rooster, one a WSP newcomer, and the other was Darko, a WSP regular. LJ was on the other side of the table as I walked in, standing next to Jamie.

After just a few minutes J, another WSP regular and Jordan came in. J horsed around with the Wii for a while and Rooster and Darko wanted to get it going.

I was downing my first of 2 energy drinks as I was dog tired from staying up too late drinking then working all day.

Eventually we got started and the action ramped up quickly as Joaquin was getting in the mix with large raises. About the 6th hand of the game I was dealt AKo and re-raised Joaquin $400 on a $150 raise. Blinds were 25-50.

I intended to buy the pot right there, but got called. The flop came with blanks and I bet out of turn. I honestly was not trying to shoot an angle or anything, I'm just an idiot. I managed to act out of turn one or two more times in the night. I'll just blame it on sake and lack of sleep.

Long story short, Joaquin folded, and I moved to muck my cards, but accidentally hit LJ's hand or arm and my cards were exposed. I can't decide if I just gained or lost respect, but oh well.

Shortly into the 2nd level LJ pushed AKo into Jaime's QQ and did not improve. She felt really bad and actually had work to do, so she left early.

Joaquin was having a tough time getting traction against a pretty tough table and ended up pushing A6h into my AKd. I managed to turn a K and Joaquin hung for a bit to deal for us.

Into the 3rd level I made a horrible preflop call vs Jordan. At the time I had a fairly healthy stack, only second to Jamie I believe. I re-raised in mid position with QJd. Jordan had made a min raise in front of me and I wanted to thin the herd.

Back around to Jordan and he pushes another ~2000. More than half my stack at the time. My brain completely forgot what to do. I couldn't put Jordan on anything, though looking back, it's obvious he was looking for a re-raise to push against.

Well, I just couldn't lay it down regardless of the fact that I'm clearly behind in this situation. At least I announced it was a bad call, but did it anyway and faced Jordan's QQ. I flopped a Jack, but diamonds were not my friend and I couldn't catch a 3rd Jack.

That hand really set me back and sent me spiraling. I went into push mode and managed to get some momentum in the 4th or 5th level.

I had another interesting hand vs Jamie when he made a big bet with AT and I pushed from the small blind with AJ. Too bad Carol wasn't there.
The flop came with AK5, then the T hit the turn, but I was saved by the K on the river. Suck resuck! woot.

Blinds were catching up to me, I bluffed Darko off a pot then he pushed the very next hand with 74d and I called my 99. Yeah, he caught 2 pair....awesome.

I still had a few chippies left but fate was not on my side as I pushed A5 against Jamie holding JJ. Despite the Ace on the flop he caught a 4 flush by the river and I was done.

Next we played NLHE for 2 orbits and 2-4 OH8 for 2 orbits in a rotation. I played well and got a few chips to play with, but I'm so passive in OH8, I managed to lose another $15.

I still call it a win, cause nothing beats having to go out of town on buisness and being able to meet up with friends and play cards, chat, and possibly get shitfaced on sake.

Cheers Folks! See you soon.
